DoIT Departmental Support - Windows OS Deployment - Supported Software and Hardware

This document outlines currently supported Windows operating systems, applications, and hardware for the Departmental Support Windows OS Deployment service.

Supported Software


Supported Operating Systems

  • Windows 11 x64 Education*
  • Windows 10 x64 Education
  • Windows Server (Semi-Annual)
  • Windows Server 2019
  • Windows Server 2021

Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office deployments use KMS Activation for licensing by default. This requires the system be present on UW-Madison campus networks for the majority of the time they are in use. If you are imaging a departmental system that you expect to be away from UW-Madison campus networks for more than six months at a time, we recommend contacting help@doit.wisc.edu to request a MAK key for your Windows or Office installation. You can then follow the instructions below to convert your software's activation method from KMS to MAK:

Supported Hardware

Hardware support for UW-Madison Dell departmental bundles along with many other system types are included. If you do not see your system on this list, please contact us to have us add the appropriate drivers. We generally will not add support for new models until someone requests it.

Note that a lack of a "Yes" in the Win 11 column simply means there wasn't a Win 11 specific driver pack from the vendor for that model last time we checked. It doesn't necessarily mean that that model doesn't support Windows 11.

If you are experiencing issues imaging a supported system and suspect the drivers are old or missing, please contact us at doit-seam-support@doit.wisc.edu and provide the following information:

  • Computer make
  • Computer model 
  • Computer serial number
  • Operating system you are attempting to deploy
  • Any additional relevant information

NOTE: T&M charges may apply for custom hardware configurations but Latitude/Optiplex/Precision/XPS systems are usually not an issue.

* Note: We do not currently provide ARM support
