How to install the Gender & Women's Studies Copier in Levy Hall room 5171

This machine is intended for official department or class use. Personal printing is not permitted.

Before you start

In order to access the Gender & Women's Studies copier/printer you must have a secure network connection. You will either need to be:

Windows (university device)

Use these instructions if you have a university-owned device and use your NetID username and password to logon to it.

  1. First, you will need to get into the settings to add the printer:

    Windows 11

    1. Go to the Start menu, then click on the icon for Settings.

    2. In the Settings window, click on Bluetooth & devices, then click on Printers & scanners.

    3. Click the button to Add device.

    4. After a few moments, toward the bottom of the printer list you should see a line that says "The printer I want isn't listed". Click the text to Add manually or Add a new device manually.

    Windows 10

    1. Click on the Start menu, click on the gear icon for Settings.

    2. In the new window that appears, click on Devices.

    3. Click on Printers and scanners, then click on the sign to Add a printer or scanner.

    4. After a few moments, at the bottom of the printer's list, you will see a link that says The printer that I want isn't listed. Click that link.

  2. On the next screen that pops up:
    1. Click on Select a shared printer by name.
    2. In the text box, enter \\gnpps-ehsb-002\GWS-LEVY-5171-Copier
    3. Click Next.

  3. After a few moments you should get a prompt that you've successfully added the printer. Click Next.

  4. You should then get one more prompt that you've successfully added the printer.
    1. If you want to use this as your default printer, check the box to Set as the default printer.
    2. If you want to test your install, click the button to Print a test page.
    3. When you are done on this screen, click Finish.

That's it. You have now installed the printer. A reminder, you will need a secure network connection (network cable or VPN) any time you need to print to this device.

Windows (personal device)

Use these instructions if you have a personally owned device, or a university-owned device that does not use your NetID username and password to logon.

Before you start, and after you are connected to VPN, go to the Canon web site and download the "Generic_Plus_PCL6_v3.50.zip". Go to your Downloads folder and extract or copy the files from the ZIP file. Be sure to make note of where you placed the files.

  1. First, you will need to get into the settings to add the printer:

    3. Click the button to Add device.

    4. After a few moments, toward the bottom of the printer list you should see a line that says "The printer I want isn't listed". Click the text to Add manually.

    Windows 10

    1. Click on the Start menu, click on the gear icon for Settings.

    3. Click on Printers and scanners, then click on the sign to Add a printer or scanner.

    4. After a few moments, at the bottom of the printer's list, you will see a link that says The printer that I want isn't listed. Click that link.

  2. On the next screen that pops up, click on Add a printer using an IP address or hostname, then click Next.

  3. On the following screen:
    • Leave Device type as Autodetect.
    • In the Hostname or IP address: box, enter 10.128.91.151.
    • The Port name will likely be the same but it is OK if it has a suffix such as _1 or _2, and so on. It just means that there was a printer on that IP address before installed on your computer.
    • Uncheck the box to Query the printer and automatically select the driver to use to speed things up.
    • Click Next.

  4. It will take a few moments to contact the printer. Then, on the Install the printer driver screen:

    1. Click on Have Disk... then click Browse. Browse to the location where you extracted the files earlier, then go into the x64 folder, then into the Driver folder.
    2. Click on the displayed file to select it, then click Open.
    3. Click OK.
    4. Select the Canon Generic Plus PCL6 printer. Then click Next.
  5. For the Printer name, enter GWS Copier Room Levy 5171. Then click Next.

  6. The window will update to Installing printer...
    • If you get a prompt asking if you would like to install this device software, click Install.

  7. Once it is done installing, check the button next to Do not share this printer and click Next.

  8. You should then get a box that "You've successfully added GWS Copier Room Levy 5171".
    1. If prompted, and if you want to use this as your default printer, make sure the box to Set as the default printer is checked. Otherwise uncheck this box.
    2. If desired, click to Print a test page.
    3. Click Finish.

  9. You will be returned to your list of installed printers. Find the GWS Copier Room Levy 5171 that you just installed and click on it. Then click on Printer properties.

  10. A new Properties window will appear.
    1. Click on the Device Settings tab. Change Device Type(8) to A4, then click OK.

  11. You have now installed the printer.

MacOS

  1. From the Apple Menu open System Preferences.

  2. Click on Printers & Scanners, then click the item to add a printer (depending on your OS version, it may be a button or may be a button to Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax...)

  3. On the Add Printer screen, click on the globe icon in the middle to add an IP printer. Then use the following information:
    • Address: 10.128.91.151
    • Protocol: AirPrint
    • Queue: (Leave blank)
    • Name: GWS Copier Room Levy 5171
    • Location and Use: (Use autofilled information or leave blank)
    • Click Add.

That's it. You have now installed the printer. A reminder, you will need a secure network connection (network cable or VPN) any time you need to print to this device.
