Google Chrome: MERIT bookmarks folder
Overview
Google Chrome on SoE-managed computers includes a MERIT folder on the bookmarks bar. It gives you quick links to School of Education IT help and resources. MERIT manages the folder, so it can't be edited or removed, and it doesn't change any of your own bookmarks.
What's in the MERIT folder?
Click MERIT on the Chrome bookmarks bar to open the folder.
- About this folder opens this article.
- Get Help! shows you how to contact MERIT for IT support.
- SoE Knowledgebase has how-to articles and guides for School of Education technology.
- DoIT Outages lets you check whether a campus service (email, Canvas, Wi-Fi, etc.) is having problems.
- Install SoE Helper opens the Chrome Web Store page for the SoE Helper extension. Installing it is optional.
Frequently asked questions
Why is this folder in my Chrome?
MERIT adds it to Chrome on all SoE-managed computers so help and common resources are always one click away.
Can I remove or edit it?
No. The folder is managed by MERIT, so you can't rename, reorder, or delete it or its bookmarks. It is separate from your own bookmarks, which you can still add, edit, and organize as usual.
Do I have to install SoE Helper?
No. The Install SoE Helper link is there for convenience. Install it only if you want it.
Chrome says "Your browser is managed by your organization." Is that a problem?
No. This message appears on all SoE-managed computers. It means MERIT manages some Chrome settings, such as this folder and automatic updates.
Chrome is asking me to relaunch. What should I do?
Chrome updates itself automatically, and an update finishes installing when Chrome relaunches. Relaunch when it's convenient; your open tabs come back afterward. If you don't relaunch within 7 days, Chrome relaunches on its own and restores your tabs.
How do I change my default web browser?
You can choose your default browser as usual:
- In Chrome: open Settings > Default browser and click Make default.
- In macOS: open System Settings > Desktop & Dock and choose a Default web browser.
Need help?
Use the Get Help! link in the MERIT folder, or visit MERIT Get Help.
