Guidelines for Responsible Use of MERIT supported Network Storage

Guidelines for responsible use of network storage on MAPLE, including examples, and support contacts.

Background:

MERIT provides network storage via fileserver MAPLE for shared use by School of Education departments, units and projects, and for individual use by School of Education faculty and staff. The advantages to using this network storage over other types of storage include:

  1. Access is restricted to authorized users through SoE-AD login credentials.

  2. Secure access is available from both on and off campus networks, with use of VPN.

  3. Files are backed up nightly. If you accidentally delete a file or folder on the server, you can request a restore through the MERIT Help Desk at helpdesk@education.wisc.edu or 265-4773.

MERIT recommends responsible use of this shared resource and periodically analyzes storage in use. If MERIT discovers above average or rapidly increasing use of network storage, we will contact the department or individual in question to learn more about their storage needs and may recommend alternative technologies or resources the department or individual can use to better meet their needs.

Guidelines for Responsible Use of Network Storage:

The following are representative examples of use cases that may or may not work well with the network storage provisioned and supported by MERIT. This is not an exhaustive list, and is only meant to guide any conversation on storage needs where demand may exceed what MERIT can currently support.

Supported Use Cases

  • Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, PDF, Word, Powerpoint and Excel files needed by individuals, departments or authorized groups for administrative processes, research projects and instructional support.

  • Files required by records retention policies. See http://archives.library.wisc.edu:2784/records/rda.html#general-records

  • Final compressed or post-production video files

Non-Supported Use Cases

  • Personal music or photo files

  • Backup copies of computer hard drives

  • Archived files not required by UW-Madison or State of Wisconsin retention policies

  • Raw video project files
