Printing (SoE Only, Windows Desktop Only) - Adding Printer by PrintServer

Below are instructions on how to add School of Education Printers with Print Server. This is the recommend way of adding printers. Keep in mind that this method will only work for Windows Desktops that are connected with an ethernet cable (wired connection) to the School of Education network.

Note: Administrator access is required to finish installing a printers on Windows desktop computers. Please let MERIT know as soon as possible if you plan on installing a printer on a Windows desktop by emailing support@education.wisc.edu or calling (608) 265-4773 so that we can send someone out to assist. If you're using a Windows Laptop or a Mac, you can disregard this.

1. Click the Windows icon at the bottom of your screen and type Run.

Start menu showing run program as a search result

2. Click Run and, in the window that appears, type: \\printserver.ad.education.wisc.edu, then click Ok.

Run program with \\printserver.ad.education.wisc.edu typed in the text box

3.  A window like the one shown below will open showing all of the printers on PrintServer.

4. Double-click on the printer that you'd like to add. If you're unsure as to which printer you need to add, see the Finding Printer Name section at the bottom of this page.

6. The printer should now begin installing automatically. Once it's done, a new window will appear showing the print queue. Go ahead and close this.

7. To confirm everything installed successfully, try printing a test page. The easiest way to do this is to click the Windows icon at the bottom of the screen, and begin typing Printers & scanners until the option below appears.

Start menu printers and scanners option

8. Click on Printers & scanners and you'll see a window appear with a list of available printers to the right. Find your printer in this list and click on it.

9. Click Print test page.

Option to print test page is shown

10. Now you can check the printer and ensure a test page was printed successfully. If the test page does not print or if the printer needs administrative credentials to add, please let MERIT know.

Finding Hostname

On your printer there might be a label with the hostname on. It is usually on a yellow label and the name is commonly found in the form of 'department-model' (For example, MERIT-M401), but the format could be different.

If there is no label on your printer, look through the printer's settings for an option that says something along the lines of 'print configuration page' or 'print network configuration'. On the printed page(s) there should be a section labeled 'Hostname' with the printer's hostname listed beneath.

As there are many different models of printers in the School of Education, we're unable to provide directions on how to get the configuration page for every printer on here. For assistance finding the host name, please contact our help desk at support@education.wisc.edu or (608)265-4773.

If you run into any questions with the above directions please reach out to the MERIT Help Desk at support@education.wisc.edu or (608) 265-4773.
