Policy (SoE only) - Network Devices that Extend Network Access to the School of Education Network
This article details the School of Education's policy on network devices that extend network access to the School of Education network.
Policy Statement
All electronic devices connected to the School of Education (SoE) managed network must not extend, aggregate, or modify network capacity or function without prior consultation and approval by a designated SoE technology support contact. The School of Education reserves the right to suspend network access to preserve the integrity of the network.
Policy Status
- Supported by SoE's Information Technology Policy Advisory Committee
- Passed by SoE's Academic Planning Council, January 18, 2012
Rationale for Policy
The School of Education's network is a shared resource provisioned by the University of Wisconsin-Madison and collaboratively managed by DoIT, MERIT, and WCER network staff to provide the technical foundation for conduct of the school's academic, research, outreach and administration missions.
In order to minimize potential disruptions to School of Education network access, and to minimize unauthorized access to network resources inside the School of Education's firewalls, electronic devices connected to the School of Education network may not extend network access beyond that original device. Examples of these devices include: hubs, switches, or wireless routers.
School of Education technology staff are available to consult on provisioning network access for valid use cases not currently addressed by existing services. The School of Education technology staff contact list by department or unit can be found at https://kb.wisc.edu/page.php?id=11609 .
