Proper computing and information security often contains three important software products critical to computer security: anti-virus, spyware detection and remediation, and a firewall. UW-Madison's DoIT offers various options for security software free to UW students and employees with a valid NetID and password.

AntiVirus

UW–Madison recommends you use Windows Defender (automatically installed/running on Windows) for personal Windows devices, and use freely available antivirus software for personal macOS devices.

For more information about securing your computer, see Antivirus Software for Personally owned Devices

Firewall / Virtual Private Network (VPN)

A firewall program runs directly on the desktop computer and protects it against attacks by controlling incoming and outgoing network traffic. Both Windows and Mac OS X have built-in firewall features. See WiscVPN.

Additional Resources

UW-Madison has hundreds of different computing environments, including departments, schools, business units and end-user desktops, that use the University network. The Office of Cybersecurity offers a variety of tools and "best practices" to help each of these environments and their users to stay secure.
