Viewing a Floor Plan
Users can view floor plans from the homepage by selecting Floor Plan Graphic Views, or by navigating to Sites via the Floor Plan icon or the Space Management menu.
Next, select one of the three facility locations:
- Main Facilities (Within UW-Madison boundary)
- Proximate Facilities (Outside of campus and within Dane County)
- Outlying Facilities (Outside of Dane County)
Main Campus Facilities Example: Red Gym
Clicking on Main Campus Facilities will display a list of facilities located in Madison that includes the following details:
- Facility (Number)
- Facility Name
- Facility Legal Name
Click on any field to view information.
This page displays the Facility Number, Facility Name, Facility Legal Name, and the Floors associated with the building. To view a floor plan, click on one of the floor numbers (highlighted in blue) listed below.

Floor Plan Example: Red Gym
Once a floor is selected—for example, Main 0020 01 (Red Gym – First Floor)—the corresponding floor plan and building information will display. You can interact with the floor plan using the viewer interface or explore details through the building information panel.
Understanding the Floor Plan Viewer Interface
At the top of the screen, you'll find several tools and navigation options that allow you to customize a floor plan:
- Facility & Floor Dropdown - Use this to select the facility and specific floor you want to view. In this example, Main 0020 01 refers to the Red Gym, first floor.
- Plan Type Dropdown - Choose the type of plan you want to view, such as the Base Floor Plan. See Graphic Views section below for additional information.
- Pan Tool – Click and drag to move around the floor plan.
- Zoom In/Out – Adjust the view for better visibility.
- Fullscreen – Expand the plan for a larger viewing area.
- Actions Menu - Use this menu for additional features such as exporting or printing the plan. See Printing a Floor Plan for more information.

Floor Information
Floor information is displayed below the floor plan. This section lists all rooms on the selected floor, along with their space class, space type, and area.
- Click on a room number to highlight and locate it on the floor plan.

Room Information
The interactive floor plan allows you to click on any room to highlight it and view detailed room information below.
- Click on a room in the floor plan to view room information below.
- Click on the highlighted room again to deselect it and clear the room information.

Graphic View Options
Floor plans can be viewed with different plan details (layers), data labels, and color hatching. These are available via preset Graphic Views.
Available Graphic Views
Use the dropdown menu to select the desired Graphic View. The default view will be SMO Plan Print.
- Architecture – Shows all architectural details available online including doors, door numbers, ramps, and displays large room numbers
- If these details do not show immediately, use the floor plan select dropdown and reselect the desired floor
- Assigned Org – Shows the annotation with room number, Assigned org code and name
- Associated Org Levels – Shows the floor plan with predetermined color hatching, legend, and the annotation with the room number and Associated Org code.
- Use the dropdown menu to select from the two options.
- Associated Org Department
- Associated Org Division
- Rooms may have more than one Associated Org assignment. In these cases, each Org is presented on the plan in two ways.
- Different predetermined color and hatching
- Annotations display every Org code
- Use the dropdown menu to select from the two options.
- Base Floor Plan – Shows the annotation with room numbers, square footage, and official room name when available.
- Functions -- Shows the annotation with room number, Function name
- Multiple Function names will show in rooms with multiple details
- SMO Plan Print – Shows the basic floor plan with large room numbers.
- This graphic view is especially helpful to print a plan. Use this view as a self-serve replacement for the SMO Plan PDFs that were available before 2025.
- Use–Subuse Detail -- Shows the annotation with room number and Use-Subuse detail name
- Multiple Use-Subuse names will show in rooms with multiple details
- Use Primary -- Shows the floor plan with predetermined color hatching, legend, and the annotation with the room number and Primary Use name.
