Steps and processes for getting started with your account and the technology in Science Hall

Welcome to Science Hall! Below you will find a handy getting-started guide to your NetID and technology in Science Hall and on campus. All links on this page will open in a separate tab or window so you won't lose your place.

  • The first step is to obtain your Wiscard, which you will need in order to obtain your NetID.
  • Once you have your Wiscard you will need to activate your NetID. Your NetID is your single sign-on (SSO) username that is used for MyWisc, Canvas, Email, VPN, and much more. Once your NetID is activated you will have your UW-Madison NetID and email address.
  • After your NetID is activated you must set up multifactor authentication, known as MFA Duo. This adds a layer of security to your account, and your Duo code or push authorization will be required for many services on campus.

The above steps are fully-supported by campus Division of Information Technology, or DoIT. Should you encounter any problems with activating your NetID, accessing MyWisc, Canvas, Email, VPN, or Duo please contact the DoIT Help Desk at 608-264-4357 (fastest), email at help@doit.wisc.edu (expect 2-3 business days response time), or you can do walk-in or online chat (more information on the the DoIT Help Desk page).

Once the steps above are complete you will also need to access the Geography Department Knowledge Base. The Geography Department KB is split into two sections: A public area with general information, and an internal-only site that requires your NetID to log in. Once you are approved for the internal Geography Department KB you will be able to setup VPN, printing, and drive shares/access you may need for research or teaching purposes.
