Kaltura - Embed Media Using oEmbed (WordPress) [UW-Madison]

This document describes how to embed UW-Madison Kaltura MediaSpace media into sites using oEmbed. oEmbed is used by Wordpress and other sites as a way to embed media.

Requirements

  • Your Wordpress site has enabled Kaltura MediaSpace embedding in your Wordpress site.

    Enabling MediaSpace oEmbed in WordPress

    Background

    Reminder: This document is targeted at Wordpress administrators. If you are not an admin and you want to enable embedding of media from UW-Madison Kaltura MediaSpace, please contact your Wordpress admin.

    By default, Wordpress has a pre-defined list of websites from which content can be provided. To allow content from UW-Madison's instance of Kaltura MediaSpace to be embedded in your Wordpress instance, we need to add MediaSpace to your allow the display of oembed providers. For more information on oembed, please see http://oembed.com/.

    Requirements

    • Admin access to your Wordpress site
    • Media in UW-Madison Kaltura MediaSace need to have their permissions set to either Unlisted or be published to a public channel. Media with their permissions set to private will not work with oembed and Wordpress. Do not publish media with copyrighted material or sensitive information as unlisted or in a public channel.

    Process

    1. Download uwmad_kaltura_oembed.zip.
    2. Navigate to your Wordpress dashboard and click Plugins.
    3. Click the Add New button near the top of the page.
    4. Click the Upload Plugin button near the top of the page.
    5. Click the Browse... button and select the file uwmad_kaltura_oembed.zip.
    6. Click the Install Now button.
    7. In the next screen you should see the text "Unpacking the package…", "Installing the plugin…", "Plugin installed successfully.". Click the link Activate Plugin.
    8. You should now be taken to a page listing all of your Wordpress plugins. You should see that "UW-Madison Kaltura Enable oEmbed" is active.

    Conclusion

    Your users will now be able to embed Kaltura MediaSpace media within your Wordpress site. Please remember that the permissions of the media need to be set to Unlisted or the media needs to be published to a public channel.

  • Media in UW-Madison Kaltura MediaSpace need to have their permissions set to Unlisted or be published to a public channel. Media with their permission set to private will not work with oEmbed. Do not publish media with copyrighted material or sensitive information as unlisted or in a public channel. While using oEmbed links to create Kaltura media embeds in WordPress is reasonably safe, be careful about using this setting with copyrighted media or sharing links to Unlisted media in Kaltura MediaSpace. Users could re-share the link or re-embed the media beyond your intended use if they view unlisted media in Kaltura MediaSpace. Process

  1. Launch Chrome or Firefox and go to Kaltura MediaSpace: mediaspace.wisc.edu. If you need more information on how to log in to MediaSpace please see Kaltura - How to Log in to Kaltura MediaSpace [UW-Madison] .
  2. Click on your name or the person silhouette icon in the upper right corner and click My Media:

  3. Search for or scroll until you find the video you want to embed. Remember that the media must be either unlisted or published to a public channel.
  4. Click on its thumbnail. Click the Share tab located under the media's title and author.
  5. Click the oEmbed tab.
  6. By default, Kaltura MediaSpace provides you with an oEmbed URL that contains a player of the size 1280x720 even though it appears that the 640x360 player is selected. To modify how the media will be embedded select the options you want to use next to Player Start & End Time, Player Skin, and Player Size.
  7. Once you are satisfied with your options, select and copy the oEmbed URL located just under the oEmbed tab label.
  8. Navigate to your Wordpress (or other) site. Paste the URL in your page or post using HTML (text editor) mode.

Please remember that the permissions of the media need to be set to Unlisted or the media needs to be published to a public channel for use with oEmbeds on WordPress. While using oEmbed links to create Kaltura media embeds in WordPress is reasonably safe, be careful about using this setting with copyrighted media or sharing links to Unlisted media in Kaltura MediaSpace. Users could re-share the link or re-embed the media beyond your intended use if they view unlisted media in Kaltura MediaSpace.
