Microsoft 365 - Office 365 Pro Plus FAQ
Effective July 1, 2024, the Office 365 Pro Plus (OPP) license will be removed from approximately 4,400 (2%) UW-Madison Microsoft 365 accounts in response to Microsoft discontinuing the license on October 31, 2024. See below for frequently asked questions (FAQ) we received about this change. Please note, as we learn more about changes and use cases, this FAQ will be updated to share new information.

Is There a Project Page for the Microsoft Office 365 Pro Plus (OPP) Add-on License Change?
What Happens to the Microsoft 365 Desktop or Some Mobile Apps That Were Installed on a Device Using an OPP Add-on License After July 1, 2024?
Nothing. The desktop and mobile apps will continue to be installed on a device.
However, when the are apps are opened after July 1, 2024, a product warning banner may appear and access to features may be limited until the desktop or mobile apps, excluding mobile Outlook and Teams apps, are activated again. This assumes the apps were authenticated using an OPP add-on license. See below for example notifications.

What are the Dates for This Change Again?
Key dates:

Monday, April 1, 2024: Targeted start date. Start recurring email notifications to the campus IT community about the upcoming change to Microsoft Office 365 Pro Plus (OPP) add-on license.

Tuesday, April 16, 2024: The first targeted email notification will be sent to affected individuals. View additional communication dates.

Monday, July 1, 2024: The Microsoft Office 365 Pro Plus (OPP) add-on license is removed from approximately 4,400 (2%) UW-Madison Microsoft 365 accounts.

Thursday, October 31, 2024: Microsoft discontinues the Microsoft Office 365 Pro Plus (OPP) add-on license. This add-on will no longer be available for purchase.

How Do I Know If I'll Be Affected?
Those affected will receive a targeted communication on the following dates:
- Tuesday, April 16, 2024
- Tuesday, May 14, 2024
- Tuesday, June 18, 2024
If you have received the emails about having the OPP license and are unsure about what is happening, please consult your IT department or the DoIT Help Desk if you have questions about the license type used to download and install Microsoft 365 desktop and mobile applications on your device.

Can I Purchase An OPP Add-on License?
Alternatively, you can purchase a personal Microsoft 365 license.
What Will I Continue to Have Access to Once The OPP License is Removed?
You will continue to have access to Microsoft 365 web applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and more.
Please note, existing Microsoft 365 desktop and mobile apps, excluding mobile Outlook and Teams apps, that were installed on your device will remain and will not be automatically uninstalled in response to the OPP add-on license removal.
Will I Still Have Access To Email After The Change?
Yes, you will still have access to your UW-Madison Microsoft 365 email.
Why am I Getting the Error, "Your school account is no longer active"?
The OPP add-on license has been removed from your UW-Madison Microsoft 365 account. If you need to continue to access Microsoft 365 desktop or mobile apps, excluding mobile Outlook and Teams apps, please consider purchasing a personal Microsoft 365 license.
