Beginning November 30, 2020, the Microsoft Teams web app will no longer support IE 11.

On August 17, 2020, Microsoft officially announced the timeline for retiring support for Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) in Microsoft 365 web apps. Individuals using IE11 will no longer be able to access Microsoft 365 web apps using that browser. To help users prepare for this change, Microsoft is showing a banner at the top of Microsoft 365 web services (e.g., Teams online, OneDrive online, OneNote online, etc) which contains a link to the download page for new Microsoft Edge.

In Office for the Web, this banner will be a yellow browser bar in the Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote for the Web Apps.

  • The banner will only be shown to customers accessing the web apps through the IE11 browser
  • The banner is not modal - users will not have to interact with it before using the app in other ways, but they can dismiss it if they choose
  • The banner is shown to each user once a week. So if a user sees this in Word for the Web, they won't see it again when they boot Excel for the Web that same week.

When this will happen

The banner has already been shown in some Microsoft 365 web services since August. Microsoft plans to start showing this banner in more web services in early December.

What you need to do to prepare

Individuals who are still using Internet Explorer 11 need to upgrade to the new Microsoft Edge browser or use a different browser to continue to access Microsoft 365 web apps.

Please note: The IE 11 changes are specific to Microsoft 365 apps and services. IE 11 remains a supported browser as a component of the Windows operating system and will follow the Lifecycle Policy for the product on which it is installed.
