Moodle - Options for Quiz Closing

UW-Madison has adopted Canvas as its single, centrally supported learning management system. As of 6/1/2018, support for Desire2Learn (D2L) and most Moodle courses has been discontinued. Access to those courses has permanently ended. However, certain Moodle courses that are part of the Adanced Quizzing Content Functional Gaps project are still available on Moodle. Those courses are located on the Moodle Extension site.

This article describes the different options for what happens when a Moodle quiz closes under the timing settings in quiz settings: "Attempts must be submitted before time expires, or they are not counted", "Open attempts are submitted automatically", and "There is a grace period for when open attempts can be submitted, but no more questions answered".

Attempts Must be Submitted Before Time Expires, or They Are Not Counted

This option means that if a student starts a quiz before the quiz closes but runs out of time before submitting the quiz, the student's submission will be in the module but will not be counted for a grade.

An instructor has three options for giving the student a grade:

  1. The student will receive a zero
  2. The instructor can go in to the attempt, manually grade it, and then manually submit the grade into the gradebook
  3. The instructor can change the closing date and the student can go back in

NOTE: If a student is actively working on a quiz when the time expires, the quiz will still be submitted for grading.

There Is a Grace Period Where Open Attempts Can be Submitted, But No Questions May Be Answered

This option allows students to have a grace period after the quiz closes if they did not submit it.

If they open the quiz before the grace period is over but after the quiz is closed, they have the option of submitting the quiz for grading or not.  They can see what questions they have answered but they can't review the answers until they submit the quiz.  They also can not answer any more questions before submitting the quiz.

When selecting this option for the timing of the quiz, the instructor is also able to set how long the grace period will be to allow submissions.

Open Attempts are Submitted Automatically

This option automatically will submit the student's quiz for grading when the time has expired regardless of if the student is finished or not.

After time has expired the student will be able to see what questions were answered and what questions were not.  They may also be able to review their answers depending on what "Review Options" were selected for the quiz.
