Moodle - Using PoodLL

UW-Madison has adopted Canvas as its single, centrally supported learning management system. As of 6/1/2018, support for Desire2Learn (D2L) and most Moodle courses has been discontinued. Access to those courses has permanently ended. However, certain Moodle courses that are part of the Adanced Quizzing Content Functional Gaps project are still available on Moodle. Those courses are located on the Moodle Extension site.

This article is about the use of PoodLL in Moodle. PoodLL is a series of plugins for Moodle. It adds features such as audio and video recording and components like stopwatches and flashcards. There is also a new PoodLL assignment type available on Moodle. To learn more about PoodLL, visit the PoodLL Website at

Enabling PoodLL Filter

PoodLL allows both instructors and students to record video and audio directly in Moodle but to allow this, instructors must first enable the PoodLL filter and create PoodLL repositories in their courses.
To enable the PoodLL filter in your course first select Filters in the "Administration" block on the course home page.

On the Course Filter Settings page, select On in the "PoodLL Filter" drop-down and click Save Changes at the bottom of the page.

Creating Repositories

To create PoodLL repositories in your course first select Repositories in the "Administration" block on the course home page.

This will take you to the Repositories page.  Select Create "PoodLL" instance under "Create a repository instance.

In the "Configure PoodLL Repository" page you will be able to select the type of repository you would like to create.  There are six PoodLL repository types and you may install any of them in your course.  For more information about the repository types visit the PoodLL docs for Moodle 2.X.  If you would like to create more than one, you will have to repeat the above steps.
NOTE: "AudioRecorder(MP3 Standalone)" is recommended over the "Audio Recorder(Red5)" repository type because less problems are reported with the MP3 standalone.

After you create the repositories, they will show up in the "Course Repositories" page and PoodLL Assignment types will be available to use.  Learn more about how to create PoodLL Assignment types here.

Also after you have created the repositories, Poodll repositories will show up any time you open the "File Picker" in your course.

This will allow you to instantaneously create a Poodll file (for exmaple: an audio recording, video recording, snapshot, or whiteboard) and place it in your course.

Moodle - PoodLL Assignment Type

PoodLL also has features within assignments. The PoodLL assignment type allows instructors to have students instantaneously record and submit video recordings, audio recordings, snapshots, and whiteboard files in assignment.  Click here to see how to create and edit PoodLL assignment type features.
