Moodle - Using MathJax in courses

UW-Madison is adopting Canvas as the single, centrally supported learning management system, and discontinuing support for Desire2Learn (D2L) and Moodle. Access to D2L and Moodle will permanently end June 1, 2018. For information about retaining materials from D2L or Moodle, please refer to this document.

Describes how to use MathJax in moodle courses.

MathJax is a javascript-based engine for high-quality display of mathematics notation in all browsers.  UW Moodle supports the use MathJax in all text and html course content.

Enabling MathJax in a moodle course

  1. Go to Settings > Course administration > Filters or if you are in an activity Administration > Course administration > Filters
  2. Enable the MathJax filter
  3. Disable the built-in TeX notation filter
  4. Click the Save changes button

The Tex notation filter converts embedded TeX expressions to images and is enabled by default.  You should disable it so that MathJax will handle TeX expressions.

Using MathJax in moodle

MathJax will render TeX and AMS TeX expressions enclosed in the standard TeX delimiters:

Inline TeX formulas:  \(...\)

Displayed TeX formulas:  \[...\] and $$...$$

MathJax will also render MathML enclosed in <math> tags

For more information, see the MathJax documentation.
