Campus Network Housing - Identifying Hospitality Access Points

Aruba Hospitality Access Points (HAPs) have been installed in the following residence halls: Adams, Aldo Leopold, Barnard, Bradley, Chadbourne, Cole, Gilman, Humphrey, Jones, Jorns, Kronshage, Dejope/Lakeshore, Liz Waters, Lowell, Mack, Merit, Ogg, Phillips, Sellery, Slichter, Smith, Sullivan, Tripp, Turner, and Witte. Each residence hall room will have its own HAP, which functions as a Wireless Access Point (WAP) broadcasting wireless networks (SSIDs) UWNet and eduroam. Depending on the residence hall, HAPs may have one, two, or four downlink Ethernet jacks for wired connections.

Residents should not remove HAPs from the wall or obstruct HAPs with furniture or other large objects.

Each HAP will be clearly labeled with a unique hostname identifier, as in the examples below.

It is important for agents to collect this identifier for all HAP cases.

One-Ethernet Jack HAPs:

One-Ethernet Jack HAPs are found in Kronshage Hall.

The unique identifier that is helpful when contacting the DoIT Help Desk is highlighted in red in the first picture under "Access Point Name." The data jack that is active is highlighted in the second picture and is blue with an E1 label on these devices.

Two or Four Ethernet Jack HAPs:

Two and/or Four Ethernet Jack HAPs are found in all residential facilities except Kronshage Hall. The data jacks on these devices are labeled E1-E2 or E1-E4 in red or blue. PSE (Power-over-Ethernet passthrough to downlink interfaces) is not available on any residence hall HAPs. All downlink ports provide the same functionality.

Note that the indicator light has been disabled on all campus HAPs. If the light is not on, it is not an indication that there is anything wrong with the device.

If your device is experiencing issues, contact the DoIT Help Desk, and provide the following:

  • Your UW-Madison NetID
  • The residence hall and room number
  • The unique HAP identifier (shown in pictures above).
