SIS/Building Your Schedule of Classes - Update Sections of a Class
Overview
The Update Sections of a Class page provides an easy place to work with all the sections of a course. Based on your role, there are different fields available for you to update. Navigate to the section of the KB based on your role:
Class Status tab: Curricular Representatives
Class Status tab: Enrollment Representatives
Class Enrollment Limits tab: Curricular & Enrollment Representatives
In Update Sections of a Class, you can:
- Change or view Auto Enrollment
- Change or view Associations
- Change or view Add Consent
- Change or view enrollment capacities and current enrollment
- View open and closed sections
- Change or view Schedule to Print option
Special Notes:
- Associations cannot be changed once enrollment has occurred in a section.
- When setting up Auto Enroll, the Auto Enroll section indicated must be a non-enrollment section.
- In most scenarios, each enrollment package uses a distinct association number.
Class Status Tab
From Home, select: Curric & Enroll Rep WorkCenter, Update Sections of a Class. The "Find" page will display.
Menu navigation: > Curriculum Management > Schedule of Classes > Update Sections of a Class.
Curricular Representatives
The following fields are available for anyone to view, but only Curricular Reps may edit:
Field | Description |
---|---|
Class Type |
Note: Usually only one component type will be the Enrollment Section. You cannot change once someone is enrolled. If there are auto enrolls, typically the Discussions or Labs are the Enrollment section and will auto enroll into a Lecture which is the Non-Enrollment section. Class Type is also set on Maintain Schedule of Classes, Basic Data Tab. |
Class Stat |
Shows the status of the class section.
|
Assoc |
View/update associations as appropriate. Match association numbers with section numbers whenever possible. If you receive an error message when trying to set the lecture Assoc to 9999, contact Curricular Services. Note: You cannot change this if there is enrollment in the section. For diagrams and set up help, see also: Class Associations |
Auto Enrl 1 |
If one (or more) class sections will automatically enroll the student in another section, use this column. Auto Enroll must be placed on Enrollment section.
Students will be enrolled in the enrollment section and any auto enrollment sections. Note: You cannot change this if there is enrollment in the section. For diagrams and set up help, see also: Class Associations |
Auto Enrl 2 |
Use if three different types of Components and auto enrollment are needed. Auto Enroll must be placed on enrollment section.
Students will be enrolled in all three sections. Note: You cannot change this if there is enrollment in the section. For diagrams and set up help, see also: Class Associations |
Add Consent |
Update this as needed to add consent to a course. Adding Department or Instructor Consent will restrict enrollment and require students to contact someone in order to enroll in the course, even if they meet catalog and/or section-level requisites. If you want the section to be open to any students who meet the catalog requisite, use No Consent.
|
Schd Print | If checked, section will display in Course Search & Enroll. |
The example course below has a Lecture and six Discussion sections, with each Discussion auto enrolling into Lecture 001.
Important Note: When changing Class Type or Association, if any Auto Enroll is indicated, remove the Auto Enroll data and save the changes. Then proceed to make changes in this order: Class Type, Association, and Auto Enroll. This can only be done if there is no enrollment!
Note: UW–Madison does not use the fields Resection or Drop Consent.

The following fields are available for both Curricular and Enrollment Reps to edit:
Field |
Description |
---|---|
Enrl Cap |
Enrollment capacity for the class section.
Note: Before you increase an enrollment capacity, be sure the assigned classroom has enough seats. You can view the room capacity on the Meetings tab of Maintain Schedule of Classes. |
Wait Cap |
Enter wait list capacity in Wait Cap. Note: Remember to change all impacted sections. Turn off wait list by typing a zero (0) in Wait Cap. |

Note: UW–Madison does not use Minimum Enrollment.
Example course: History 101 has nine Discussion sections that auto enroll into Lecture 001. Discussions 301-308 each have an enroll capacity of 18, and the Lecture has a total enrollment capacity of 144 (eight sections x 18 students per section = 144 students). Discussions 301-308 also have a wait list capacity of five students. Discussion 333 is currently closed.
Tip: Use the View All link on the row counter
Update Sections of a Class will only display the first eight sections of a class when you first open up a course. Use the link to View All on the top row counter to view all of the sections to make sure you are seeing everything.
