Deadlines for Processing International and Domestic Applications

This document provides key dates and deadlines for programs to keep in mind as they review, recommend, and deny applicants admission. In addition to providing specific dates for each upcoming term, this document also provides how these key dates and deadlines are determined. Some deadlines listed are set by offices outside the Graduate School and are subject to change.

 

Spring 2026

  • October 31, 2025: Last day to recommend international applicants for spring 2026 for in-person programs.
  • November 3, 2025: Auto-matriculation begins.
  • November 10, 2025: Enrollment starts for newly admitted Graduate School students.
  • November 21, 2025: ISS stops accepting new I-20 applications for international students located outside the country. Please see ISS's ⁠⁠Becoming A Global Badger resource where the deadline will be posted. 
  • December 2, 2025: Graduate School default final deadline in Slate for applicants. The deadline is specifically December 2, 12:00AM ET (11:00PM CT on December 1, 2025). Your program's final deadline may be different than this default deadline; please see Deadlines in Slate Explained.
  • December 22, 2025: Auto-matriculation ends. Backdating and manual matriculation begins.
  • January 5, 2026: Last day for a program's final deadline. To find your program's final deadline, please see Check Your Program's Application Details, Deadlines, and Faculty Lists.
  • January 5, 2026: Last day to recommend domestic applicants for spring 2026. Last day to recommend applicants for online programs for spring 2026.
  • January 5, 2026: ISS stops accepting applications for transfer I-20s. Please see ISS's ⁠⁠Becoming A Global Badger resource where the deadline will be posted. 
  • January 13, 2026: Last day to request term change for applicants into or out of spring 2026
  • January 13, 2026: Last day to recommend reentry for domestic applicants for spring 2026. Last day to recommend reentry for all applicants to online programs for spring 2026.
  • January 20, 2026: First day of classes for spring 2026.
  • January 20, 2026: Application for spring 2027 term turned on.

Summer 2026

  • March 16, 2026: Auto-matriculation begins.
  • March 23, 2026: Enrollment starts for newly admitted Graduate School students.
  • March 31, 2026: Last day to recommend international applicants for summer 2026 for in-person programs.
  • TBD (approximately April 16, 2026): ISS stops accepting new I-20 applications for international students located outside the country. Please see ISS's ⁠⁠Becoming A Global Badger resource where the deadline will be posted. 
  • May 11, 2026: Auto-matriculation ends. Backdating and manual matriculation begins.

  • June 15, 2026: First day of classes for summer 2026 DHH 8-week session.
  • June 15, 2026: Application for summer 2027 term turned on.

Fall 2026

  • June 2, 2026: Graduate School default final deadline in Slate for applicants. The deadline is specifically June 2, 12:00AM ET (11:00PM CT on June 1, 2026). Your program's final deadline may be different than this default deadline; please see Deadlines in Slate Explained.
  • June 15, 2026: Last day to recommend international applicants for fall 2026 for in-person programs.
  • TBD (approximately June 17, 2026): Auto-matriculation begins.
  • TBD (approximately June 24, 2026): Enrollment starts for newly admitted Graduate School students.
  • TBD (approximately July 3, 2026): ISS stops accepting new I-20 applications for international students located outside the country. Please see ISS's ⁠⁠Becoming A Global Badger resource where the deadline will be posted.

  • August 15, 2026: Last day to recommend domestic applicants for fall 2026. Last day to recommend applicants for online programs for fall 2026.

  • August 19, 2026: Last day to request term change for applicants into or out of fall 2026 term.

  • August 26, 2026: Last day to recommend reentry for domestic applicants for fall 2026. Last day to recommend reentry for all applicants to online programs for fall 2026.
  • September 2, 2026: First day of classes for fall 2026.
  • September 2, 2026: Application for fall 2027 term turned on.

Spring 2027

  • October 30, 2026: Last day to recommend international applicants for spring 2027 for in-person programs.

  • January 19, 2027: Application for spring 2028 term turned on.

How deadlines are determined (alphabetical order)

Application for [the next year's term] turned on

  • First day of classes set by the Academic Calendar.
  • For summer term, the first day of classes is based on the DHH 8-week session. You can find when the DHH 8-week session begins by visiting the Office of the Registrar's Session Dates web page.

Auto-matriculation begins

  • One week prior to the date enrollment begins for newly admitted Graduate School students.
  • Applies to both newly admitted applicants and reentry applicants.

Auto-matriculation ends. Backdating and manual matriculation begins

  • First day of the following SIS term.

Enrollment starts for newly admitted Graduate School students

  • Typically 10 weeks prior to the first day of classes.
  • Set by Registrar's Office.

First day of classes for [term]

Graduate School Default Final Deadline in Slate for applicants

  • The date that Slate defaults to for programs that have not specified a Program Final Deadline. See Deadlines in Slate Explained KB document for more information.

ISS stops accepting applications for transfer I-20s

  • 15 days before the first day of classes.
  • For summer term, date is based of the beginning of the DHH 8-week session.
  • Set by International Student Services.

ISS stops accepting new I-20 applications for international students located outside the country

  • 60 days before the first day of classes begins.
  • The deadline is due to the amount of processing time that is needed for visas and immigration documents for admitted students needing a new I-20.
  • For summer term, the first day of classes is based on the DHH 8-week session.
  • Set by International Student Services. For more deadlines related to international students, please refer to the ISS Becoming a Global Badger web page.

Last day for a program's final deadline

  • Fall: August 8 (August 7 at 11:00pm Central Time specifically in Slate)
  • Spring: January 5 (January 4 at 11:00pm Central Time specifically in Slate)
  • Summer: June 2 (June 1 at 11:00pm Central Time specifically in Slate)

        Last day to recommend domestic applicants. Last day to recommend applicants to online programs for [term]

        • Fall: August 15
        • Spring: January 5
        • Summer: June 2

        Last day to recommend international applicants for [term] for in-person programs

        • 11 weeks prior to the first day of classes, usually a Monday.
        • Three weeks prior to the ISS deadline to accept new I-20 applications.

        Last day to request term change for applicants into or out of [term]

        • Fall: Two weeks before the first day of class of term
        • Spring: One week before the first day of class of term
        • Summer: One week before the first day of class of term

        Last day to recommend reentry for a domestic applicant. Last day to recommend reentry for online applicant into [term]
