WAF - Installing and Accessing

This document details how to connect to the Windows Access Facility (WAF).

WAF Account Setup

University employees should contact help@doit.wisc.edu to request a WAF account.

Connecting to the WAF

Windows Users:

  1. Confirm you're connected to a campus network, or have a WiscVPN connection active if you're on an off-campus network
  2. Click Start -> Windows Accessories -> Remote Desktop Connection
  3. Under Computer: enter windowsaccess.doit.wisc.edu
  4. If you plan on printing to a locally connected printer, click on the triangle next to Show Options, select Local resources and ensure the Printers checkbox is checked. This should make your printer visible from the WAF server.
  5. Click Connect to start the WAF connection. The WAF server uses NetID authentication; enter your NetID and password at the prompt.

Macintosh Users:

Note: Mac OS X users can download the Microsoft Remote Desktop Client from the Apple App Store.  After the application downloads and installs:

  1. Confirm you're connected to a campus network, or have a WiscVPN connection active if you're on an off-campus network
  2. Run the Microsoft Remote Desktop program from your Applications folder.
  3. Click the plus sign in the upper left corner of the window to set up a new connection
  4. Enter windowsaccess.doit.wisc.edu as the PC name; the other fields can remain blank
  5. If you plan on printing to a locally connected printer, click the Session tab at the top of the window, and then check Forward printing devices
  6. Exit the window. The new connection will be listed in the main Microsoft Remote Desktop window as windowsaccess.doit.wisc.edu
  7. Click on the new connection to highlight it, then either double-click the name or click on start to connect
  8. The WAF server uses NetID authentication; enter your NetID and password at the prompt.

Unix/Linux Users:

  • Unix/Linux users can use rdesktop (http://www.rdesktop.org/) or the client of their choice.
  • The server name is windowsaccess.doit.wisc.edu.
  • The WAF server uses NetID authentication; enter your NetID and password when prompted for credentials.
