Research Activities Occurring in an Educational Setting
Research reviewing/examining curricula: These categories refer to standard, existing curriculum. The IRB will likely request confirmation from the school or district ensuring that the curriculum being studied is a part of standard, regular curriculum.
Review of educational records: Research including the review of educational records requires consideration of FERPA regulations. For more information about FERPA, please review the IRB office's FERPA guidelines.
Research conducted at a school site/with school personnel: The IRB will likely require site permission to conduct any research activities at a school site or where school personnel are participants. The study team will need to find out what the selected site(s) approval process is for outside research studies. See IRB Guidance: Research in K-12 Schools and IRB Guidance: Site Permission for more details.
