1Password - Using 1Password

1Password is a simple, elegant password manager that helps you organize your secure information, save and fill logins, and find what you need—right at your fingertips.

Before You Get Started


Save Your Passwords

To save a login:

  1. Navigate to the website login page for which you'd like to save credentials.
  2. Enter your username and password to login.
  3. Click Save in 1Password.

  4. Edit the title and choose the Vault where you want to save it. Then click Save.

To update an existing login, make changes and choose Save in 1Password, then click Update.

Fill Logins and Other Items

To fill an item:

  1. Navigate to the website login page.
  2. Select it from the dropdown below the username or password field.
    • Select login
  3. If multiple items are suggested, use arrow keys or start typing to filter your items.

Sign In to Sites with Passkeys

Depending on the website, you may need to create an account with a username and password before you can create a passkey.

  1. On a passkey-supported site, choose to create a passkey.
  2. 1Password will prompt you to save it.

  3. Update an existing Login item or save the passkey as a new item.
  4. To sign in later, 1Password will show your saved passkeys. Click Sign in next to the one you want.

Sign In to Sites with a Provider

  1. Sign in to a website using a provider like Google or Facebook.
  2. Click Save item.

  3. Choose a Vault, select the provider's login, and click Save.
  4. The next time you visit the sign-in page for that website, 1Password will offer to sign you in to the site with the provider you saved in the item. Select Sign in next to the provider you want to sign in with.

Use Suggested Passwords

When signing up for a new account or changing a password:

  1. Click the 1Password icon in the password field.
  2. Select Use Suggested Password.

Create Custom Passwords

  • From the inline menu (appears below form fields):

    1. Select the password field.
    2. Click the inline settings button inline settings button and choose Password Generator.
    3. Adjust settings and click Autofill.

  • From the pop-up (To open the pop-up, select the 1Password button in your browser’s toolbar):

    1. Click the 1Password button in your browsers toolbar.
    2. Select Password Generator, adjust settings, and copy or fill the password.

    3. View your generated passwords in Password Generator History.

Memorable Passwords are generated based on the language set in Settings > Appearance & Shortcuts > Language. Supported languages include English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Dutch.


Search 1Password

  1. Open the 1Password pop-up in your browser.
  2. Start typing to search.

  3. To cancel the search, click X or press Esc.

View and Edit Items

  • Click an item to view details or use arrow keys to select it.

  • To mark an item as a favorite, select the ellipsis and choose Add to Favorites.
  • To copy any field, select it.
  • To reveal a password, select the chevron icon to the right of it, then select Reveal
  • To edit, click the ellipsis and select Edit. You can:
    • Add tags or custom fields.
    • Move the item to another Vault.
    • Archive or delete the item.

Use Drag and Drop

Drag login details directly from 1Password into apps or browser fields to fill passwords, security answers, and more.

Fill One-Time Passwords (OTPs)

You can use 1Password as an authenticator for a site that supports two-factor authentication.

  1. Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) for a site.
  2. Scan the QR code provided by the site using the 1Password pop-up. 

    When you see a QR code for 1Password to scan, select the 1Password button in your browser’s toolbar and select your login for the site to view the item’s details.

    Select the ellipsis > Scan QR Code to save it to your 1Password item.

  3. 1Password will save the OTP and autofill it when signing in.

Switch Accounts and Vaults

  1. Click 1password icon "All Accounts" to view all accounts. To see only the items for a specific account, select the name of the account you want.

  2. Select All Items to see all items or filter by specific Vaults.

Use Watchtower for Security Alerts

  • Watchtower highlights password breaches and other security issues.
  • Enable alerts:
    1. Click the 1Password button in your browser menu.
    2. Go to Settings > Watchtower and turn on Check for vulnerable passwords.

Share Items Securely

  1. Open and unlock 1Password, find the item to share, and select it.
  2. Click the ellipsis (...) and choose Share.
    • Share from 1Password
  3. Set an expiration date and sharing permissions, then click Get Link to Share.
  4. Copy and share the link via email or text.

Lock and Unlock 1Password

  • To Lock: Click the 1Password button in your browser toolbar, then choose Lock 1Password.
  • To Unlock: Click the 1Password button, then enter your password or use biometric authentication if enabled.

Tip: If using Safari without the 1Password desktop app, enable Unlock using Touch ID in Settings > Security.


Manage Your Settings

To manage your settings, select the 1Password in your browser menu and choose Settings. You’ll be able to manage:

  • Watchtower alerts.
  • Language preferences.
  • Pop-up behavior and appearance.
  • Accounts and Vaults.
  • Notifications
