DoIT Shared Tools - GitLab - Group and Project Moves/Transfers

When groups or projects are moved, there are some side effects. Shared Tools recommends:

  1. Reviewing the documentation and testing before moving any projects or groups.

    1. Transferring an existing project into another namespace
    2. Groups > Transferring Groups

  2. Duplicate an existing group and project or create a new test group and project. Perform a move and review epics, boards, issues, members, groups, and projects to:

    1. Confirm the meta-data is retained.
    2. Ensure members and assignees are carried over.
    3. Determine if any admin level permissions are required to retain specific information.
    4. Test links to see if any absolute links need to be updated.
    5. Create a merge request, pull, and push changes to the repositories to verify the settings will need to be changed.
    6. Document your findings prior to moving the primary group.
    7. Share this information with your group members a few days before the final move.
