You may have seen a subscription expiration warning recently in the GitLab UI. However, please be assured that GitLab has provided an extension of DoIT’s current licensing, terms and conditions. This extension begins when the current subscription ends. At this time, you can continue to use GitLab as normal.

What happens next?

The Shared Tools team is analyzing the results of the user survey and continuing DoIT service team interviews. Thank you to everyone who is participating and expressing an interest in the DoIT GitLab instance. The results will provide the necessary information for the development of a funding model and budget possibilities for a paid DoIT GitLab enterprise education license. Long term, there will be separate discussions regarding the DoIT GitLab instance and how it may apply to use cases outside of DoIT.

Regardless, GitLab as a service will continue for DoIT and any existing groups/collaborators. At a minimum, the community/free/core edition will be available. If for any reason the current service tier (Ultimate) will not continue, the Shared Tools team will negotiate for the time to adjust any existing processes. Our current negotiations and efforts are in support of continuing our existing service and a paid service tier of GitLab.

The Shared Tools team will be working through the budget discussions and provide another update by the week of 12/21/2020 or before. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact DoIT Shared Tools help@doit.wisc.edu see also https://kb.wisc.edu/shared-tools/24031.

Sincerely,

DoIT Shared Tools
