On Tuesday, September 26, 2023, GitLab (git.doit.wisc.edu) was upgraded from 15.8 to GitLab 16.2. This was a major version upgrade.
The user interface in this version of GitLab is different. There is a new navigation. User feedback was used to improve the left sidebar design and features. Read more about the new interface.
What should users do?
- Read the Gitlab 16.0 release announcement
- Identify new features you want to try
- Determine if changes impact your use of GitLab
- Prepare for significant changes in the GitLab user interface and how things are displayed
- Learn more about select breaking changes and improvements
What can users expect?
- GitLab was unavailable on Tuesday, September 26, 2023 from 8:00 p.m. to Wednesday September 27, 2023 2:00 a.m. CST.
- Users may need to make minor adjustments after the upgrade

Impact on many users

Expiration date for ALL access tokens - Existing tokens with no expiration date will now have expiration set to 1 year.

Legacy URLs that predate use of “/-/” will break - Only would impact URLs to GitLab UI that were hard-coded years ago. No impact on API.

Terraform
- The latest Terraform templates will overwrite current stable templates
- Support for periods (.) in Terraform state names might break existing states
