Navigating the KB

There are two main ways to find articles in the KB: The Topic Tree or the search bar.

Search

The search bar up top can look through all articles in our lab's KB if "All Topics" is selected (which it is by default.)

If an article contains a keyword that you searched for, that'll show up first. Keywords are set when an article is written. If I search for "slack," it finds just one article, because it's looking for articles with the keyword "slack."

If I click the dropdown next to Keyword and select Fulltext instead, it will search for any article that contains the word "slack". There's a lot more!

Topics

Articles can also be part of a fixed set of categories called Topics. Topics can have sub-topics, those sub-topics can have sub-topics, etc.

You can see a tree structure of all of the Topics by clicking Site Map next to the search bar.

Let's say I were to click on "Computers, internet, software". I'm shown all of the articles with that Topic. Notice that you could do the same thing by selecting the dropdown next to the search bar, and selecting the topic manually.

Now, if I click into one of those articles, I see all of the Topics that article is in. Notice that there can be multiple topics. Also notice that I can follow the hyperlinks in the topic list to go to a higher category of that topic.

What if I want to change the Topics or Keywords for an article? Or I think something is wrong?

For how to make changes yourself, see Maintaining the SMNG KB. But also, the lab manager generally maintains the KB and documentation in general, so you can reach out to them for help.
