Change in how UW Health-employed GME physicians will be recognized within SMPH

Dear Colleagues,

We’re writing to inform you of a change in how UW Health-employed GME physicians will be recognized within SMPH.

Currently, all UW Health employed GME physicians receive a $0 honorary associate appointment with SMPH, which is coterminous with their UW Health resident or fellowship training. This appointment has primarily served to provide GME physicians with a NetID, Wiscard, and access to UW–Madison libraries.

Following joint discussions between the UW Health GME Office, UW–Madison, and SMPH, a decision has been made to discontinue the honorary associate appointment for GME physicians. Instead, they will now be granted a “spec auth” (special authorization) status with UW–Madison. This new status will still allow GME physicians to receive a NetID, Wiscard, and library access—but because it is a status rather than an appointment, they will no longer be included in SMPH compliance training requirements. In addition, given the change in parking assignments for GME physicians, the honorary appointment was deemed no longer necessary.

This change will take effect with the incoming cohort of GME physicians starting this summer. For current GME physicians, we will convert their honorary associate appointments to “spec auth” status after piloting the change with the incoming cohort of GME physicians,  and following the go-live of Workday (our new HR system) in July. This transition will be communicated in advance.

If your department has any concerns or unique situations you’d like to discuss, please connect with your HR Operations Coordinator, who can help assess the situation and explore options.

Best regards,

SMPH HR Operations
