Student Help: Fundamentals - Overview

- A Student Help (SH) employee is typically an undergraduate student. In most instances, the student will be enrolled at UW-Madison. Less commonly, the student will be enrolled at another institution (high school or university). In rare circumstances, a graduate student may hold a student hourly appointment so long as the work being performed is fitting of the student hourly employment type versus a graduate assistantship.
- Student Help employees are non-exempt (hourly) employee under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and are paid bi-weekly. Student Help employees are eligible for overtime at a rate of one and one-half times the regular hourly rate if hours worked exceed 40 in a week. If student holds more than one job, the 40 hours per week limit is calculated by combining hours worked for all active jobs.
- To comply with the federal Affordable Care Act, employment as a student help employee is limited to working an average of no more than 29 hours per week and/or 130 hours per month over a rolling 90-day period. Calculation of hours worked includes the sum of hours worked in all positions of employment you hold within the University of Wisconsin System.
- Employed “at-will”, have no expectation of continued employment, and do not count toward UW-Madison’s full-time equivalent (FTE) count.
- Non-benefits eligible for employer-sponsored health insurance.
- Purpose is to help meet the needs of the university, provide students with financial support in pursuit of their academic goals, and to provide opportunities for academic or administrative job experience. The job duties may or may not be related to their field of study.
