Recruiting Instructors, Graduate Students, and Staff: SoHE Summer PEOPLE Program

SoHE Undergraduate Student Services Assistant Dean, Patrick Jackson, is hoping to recruit you for a SOHE program this summer for high school PEOPLE scholars. He is looking for commitments from faculty, graduate students, and staff interested in helping for partial or the full week during the dates of July 11, 12, 14, & 15. The commitment could range from 3 hours one day to four half days, depending on your interest level and role. Presenters and facilitators will be compensated for your time!

Needed: instructors, graduate students, and staff to help brainstorm, develop activities, and facilitate an in-person experiential program. You would not need to be involved at all stages of the program, but we do need at least one discipline representative for each SoHE major (faculty or graduate student) able to lead a 3 hour subject introduction (including breaks and a 30 minute student intern panel). Additionally, we need at least two group facilitators who will develop and lead a group of about 13 students through a four day (afternoons) “human centered problem-solving and innovation exercise” (this can include presenting a “complex problem or challenge”, a field trip, prototyping, and final presentation/celebration). The goal is to expose the students to the breadth of SOHE disciplines, while providing them an engaging, hands-on experience. Contact Patrick Jackson with any questions patrick.jackson@wisc.edu

Fall 2022 Sociology Courses

Sociology 915, seminar 001, 9:30 am - 12:00 noon Wednesdays; Topic: The Sociology of W.E.B. Du Bois; Instructor: Professor Mustafa Emirbayer

W.E.B. Du Bois (1868-1963) was one of the founders of American Sociology.  This seminar surveys his life's work.  It centers on a close reading of original texts.  The course encompasses Du Bois's early philosophical writings; his great monument of urban ethnography, The Philadelphia Negro; his classic collections, The Souls of Black Folk, Darkwater, and The Gift of Black Folk; his Atlanta Laboratory studies on The Negro Church and Morals and Manners Among Negro Americans; his neglected classic biography, John Brown; one of his several novels, The Dark Princess; his autobiography, Dusk of Dawn; his monumental work of historical and comparative sociology, Black Reconstruction in America; and his late post-colonial writings, The World and Africa and The Color of Democracy.  We will also read two recent books on the significance of Du Bois for sociology and social thought.

Sociology 915, Seminar 002, 9:30 am -12:00 noon Tuesdays; Topic: Ethnography and Theory, Ethnography As Theory; Instructor: Professor Mustafa Emirbayer

It is customary to associate sociological ethnography with sociological methodology.  Most works of ethnography include methodological appendices (some quite famous in their own right), and ethnography itself typically is defined as a method of sociological inquiry.  Yet ethnography is as much about theory as it as about method.  As far back as the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, ethnographers were advancing important theoretical ideas and insights, and present-day commentators have argued that their very way of doing ethnography itself amounted to a significant theoretical contribution.  Today it is more important than ever to ponder the relation of ethnography to theory, since we are witnessing in recent years, among the younger generation of American sociologists, a remarkable upsurge of interest in participant observation-style ethnographic research.
