CAPS and API Newsletter: Fall 2022 Kick Off

The Coordinators of Academic Programs & Services (CAPS) and Academic Planning & Innovation (API) Teams welcome you back for the Fall 2022 semester! Below are several updates and reminders from our teams as we start a new academic year.

NEWS, UPDATES, AND REMINDERS

Feedback on Teaching (FoT)

Stay tuned for more information on a new professional development offering in Human Ecology. The program is called Feedback on Teaching (FoT). This opportunity will enable you to:

  • Reflect on your teaching in a relaxed, supportive way
  • Receive thoughtful guidance from a peer
  • Identify ways to improve student learning
  • Connect and engage with others in SoHE, as well as campus, teaching and learning community

While the primary goal of Feedback on Teaching is to facilitate formative feedback, some may seek summative feedback as well for the purposes of tenure, promotion or a teaching portfolio.  (Contact: Kathy O’Connell kathleen.oconnell@wisc.edu)

Course Support for Fall

If you need assistance getting your course(s) ready for fall, please contact Kathy O’Connell (kathleen.oconnell@wisc.edu).

Undergraduate Student Enrollment Permission Reminder

All enrollment questions, including waitlist inquiries, are overseen by the API Enrollment Team. As courses close and seats open back up, often closer to the start of new terms, the SoHE enrollment team works diligently through the waitlists. Please note many factors go into waitlist invitations including, but not limited to, time to graduation, academic level, major requirements, place on the list, special circumstances, etc.  Also, just because there appears to be seats ‘open’ in a course does not guarantee students can openly enroll in a course. There could be a waitlist in effect on these ‘open’ courses, which are not easily visible via the Course, Search, & Enroll app, or there may be course section requisites in place. It is always best practice for all instructors (TAs, SAs, lecturers, faculty members, etc.) to simply forward any student’s request to join your class(es) directly to enrollment@sohe.wisc.edu

ACTION ITEMS

Probationary Faculty Teaching Observations
The UW-Madison Divisional Committees require a minimum of one teaching observation per year for probationary faculty. Completed teaching observations should be shared with Michelle Hamilton (mehamilton4@wisc.edu). Copies of the teaching observations will be uploaded to the probationary faculty member’s tenure dossier Box folder.

Uploading Course Syllabus into Canvas
Access to course syllabi is a requirement for the university’s accreditation and departments are responsible for keeping syllabi on file. To facilitate this process, the API team will retrieve syllabi from Canvas and add it to the SoHE Syllabi Repository after instructors have uploaded course syllabi to Canvas.

Please follow the instructions in the KB linked below to upload a PDF of your course syllabus to Canvas:
