Summer Collegiate Experience

This document provides guidance for L&S departments participating in the Summer Collegiate Experience (SCE).

The Summer Collegiate Experience is a six-week residential program for selected incoming first-year students. Participating students complete summer coursework, work with academic advisors, and build connections with peers, faculty, and staff before beginning the academic year.

SCE courses are enrolled only by SCE Program participants and should be closed to enrollment by non-participants and other general UW students.

About SCE

The program is designed to:

  • Support students' transition to UW-Madison.
  • Build connections among students, faculty, and staff.
  • Allow students to earn degree credit before the fall semester.

SCE Courses

Courses offered through SCE are selected based on factors such as:

  • Alignment with first-year student interests.
  • General education requirements.
  • Representation of different majors and fields of study.
  • Historical enrollment patterns and student feedback.

Scheduling

Departments should use the following standard scheduling structure when creating SCE course sections:

  • Session is FFF. Summer 2027 dates: Monday, June 28 – Friday, August 6
  • Section (lecture) number 047 
  • Set enrollments at 0 (restrict) in order to restrict enrollment to SCE students
  • SCE Classes are taught within two time blocks, AM (9 - noon) and PM (1 - 3:30 pm). SCE staff will work with instructors/departments to find a class time that best fits the instructor’s and SCE program schedules.

Staffing & Funding

SCE instructional costs are funded by the Center for Academic Excellence (CAE) and are not included in the L&S Summer Budget Model.

  • There is no cost or additional revenue to departments from SCE courses or instructional appointments. 
  • Instructor and TA appointments follow standard Summer Term appointment structures described in the Summer Instructional Appointments KB: 64.5% for seven weeks (one preparation week and six weeks of instruction).
  • Approved appointment details are documented on the Expense Details Report.
  • Departments may assign one TA per course. Contact Nicholas Ewoldt if instructional needs differ.
  • Departments may be asked to provide a TA workload if one is not already approved for the SCE version of this class.
