L&S Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professorship (VDAP) Awards

Award Details

The Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professorship provides $75,000 over five years.

The funding comes from two sources:

• $50,000 provided by Vilas funds (fund 133)
• $25,000 in matching funds (fund 233)
  • $12,500 from the Department 
  • $12,500 from the College (L&S)

Setting Up the Award

The matching funds (fund 233) are provided over the five-year award period. A transfer is required each year.

For the first year: 

1. The department transfers $2,500 from a UW Foundation fund to a new 233 gift worktag. This transfer must be completed before RSP can create the 133 worktag.
2. Follow the instructions to complete the transfer: L&S Gift Management: Disbursements from the UW Foundation 
3. After the transfer is complete:
   1. The College (L&S) asks RSP to create the 133 worktag.
   2. The College (L&S) transfers its $2,500 matching contribution into the 233 gift worktag.

Annual Transfers

For years 2-5, both the department and the College (L&S) contribute $2,500 each year to the 233 gift worktag. 

Each year, 

• The department completes a Disbursement Request on the UW Foundation website to transfer $2,500 from a UW Foundation fund to the 233 gift worktag. UW Foundation - Gift & Fund Management 
•  After the department submits the transfer request, the College (L&S) adds its $2,500 matching contribution to the same 233 gift worktag.

This annual process continues until the full $25,000 in matching funds has been provided over the five-year award period.

Matching Funds When a PI Retires

If a PI retires, the department decides how the matching funds (fund 233) will be handled. Any decision to continue using the matching funds must be approved by Kristin R. Eschenfelder the interim dean of the College of Letters & Science. Please email dean@ls.wisc.edu to request the dean’s approval.
