Web Hosting - Beginners Guide
There are various hosting options available at the UW-Madison and we'll help you decide if DoIT Web Hosting is a fit. Here you will find a straight forward matrix of various web site publishing options.
Consultations can be booked with us directly or please reach out to webhosting@doit.wisc.edu with any questions.
If you are creating a new web site for a department or revamping an existing one, we recommend to you try Wiscweb first, to prove that it won't work for your site needs before exploring other options.
-- Wiscweb takes care of all WordPress updates, security, etc. and customers can focus solely on their content. It’s subsidized by campus (free) and hosting thousands of UW-Madison branded web sites.
If you require more control DoIT Web Hosting maybe a fit. It is a paid service providing community hosting where you can install WordPress with custom plugins and themes, but also provides hosting for Java/Tomcat, Node.js, ASP.NET, Ruby, PHP, MySQL, static web sites and more.
-- Customers are responsible for the content, development, testing, troubleshooting and maintaining updates to their applications. Web Hosting is responsible for maintaining a stable and secure platform for delivering applications and web server access.
In some cases a split of Wiscweb and Web Hosting works well. Whereby, you have everything you possibly can in Wiscweb as the primary site (dept.wisc.edu) and supplemental applications as needed in web hosting (apps.dept.wisc.edu).
If you require full control of your hosting and server please see dedicated hosting options:
