WiscIT - Request Offering Best Practices
Naming fields
We recommend using simple names for field controls, and adding any explanatory text in the “Description” area for the control. E.g. "NetID to authorize" is a better than name than "Enter the NetID of the user that needs access to the tool" (this would be better put in the description)
Using templates
Templates are available in the Form Designer Tools pane of the Design Request Form tab. Double click a template and it will append the template’s controls to the form. The only template available as of writing is NetID of User.
Asking for a person or NetID in a request offering
Service Requests will be automatically linked to the customer that is submitting the request. Their NetID and basic information will be available on the service request form. Do not ask them to confirm their NetID in the request offering.
If you need to request another person’s information, e.g. “Person to authorize”, we recommend asking for their NetID using a drop-down control validated from the w_LoginID of employee (Display field: Login ID). You can bring additional information from the chosen employee record and use it to populate additional fields. We recommend showing the chosen user’s Display Name and Email address.
Note: There is a template available “NetID of User” in the Form Designer Tools pane that will put these controls pre-configured onto the form if clicked.
Validating fields
The List and Drop-down selection controls can be validated by clicking the blue pencil icon and configuring the Pick List section. Any user with access to build request offerings can define a custom pick list, and we recommend using a custom pick list for simple lists. If you need to validate a control against a data source, please work with the WiscIT team to identify or create the appropriate pick list. Only WiscIT administrators can create pick lists for database objects.
