Internet Explorer - Enable or Disable the Pop-Up Blocker

This document explains how to enable and disable the pop-up blocker on various versions of Internet Explorer.

Internet Explorer 6

Enable or Disable the Pop-Up Blocker

  1. Launch Internet Explorer.
  2. Click on Tools in the toolbar.
  3. Then select Internet Options from the menu.
  4. Click on the Privacy tab.
  5. Under the Pop-up Blocker section, either check or uncheck the box next to Block pop-ups (or Turn on Pop-up Blocker). A checkmark inside the box indicates that pop-ups will be blocked.
  6. Click the Apply button at the bottom right corner of the window. You will only be able to click Apply if you have made any changes to your settings; otherwise, the button will be greyed out. 
  7. Then click OK to exit. Your preference should now be set. Repeat the same process above to turn your blocker back on or off. 

Change Notification and Filter Level Settings

The Notifications and Filter Level settings allows you to set your pop-up filter level and additional notification preferences.

  1. Launch Internet Explorer.
  2. Click on Tools in the toolbar.
  3. Then select Internet Options from the menu.
  4. Click on the Privacy tab.
  5. Under the Pop-up Blocker section, click Settings.
  6. At the bottom of the Pop-up Blocker Settings window, there will be a drop-down menu under Filter level. Choose your filter level preference. There are three levels to choose from: High, Medium, and Low. It is generally recommended to keep the default setting of Medium.
  7. Above the filter drop-down, there will be two boxes that can be checked or unchecked for preferences regarding sound and information previews for notifications. You can turn these on by checking their respective boxes. 
  8. Select Close at the bottom right corner. 
  9. Once back in the Internet Options window, click Apply in the bottom right corner. You will only be able to click Apply if you have made any changes to your settings; otherwise, the button will be greyed out. 
  10. Then click OK to exit. Your preferences should now be set. 

Add or Remove Pop-Up Exceptions and Allowances

The Exceptions setting allows you to enable pop-ups from specific websites.

  1. Launch Internet Explorer.
  2. Click on Tools in the toolbar.
  3. Then select Internet Options from the menu.
  4. Click on the Privacy tab.
  5. Under the Pop-up Blocker section, click Settings.
  6. At the top of the Pop-up Blocker Settings window, there will be two white boxes. Under Address of website to allow, you can type in the URL for any pop-up exception you would like to make. After clicking Add, you should see the website address added to the second box titled Allowed sites.  
  7. To remove a site from your Allowed sites, simply click on the specific URL to highlight it, and then click the Remove button to the right of the box. To remove all exceptions, click Remove all...
  8. Select Close at the bottom right corner. 
  9. Once back in the Internet Options window, click Apply in the bottom right corner. You will only be able to click Apply if you have made any changes to your settings; otherwise, the button will be greyed out. 
  10. Then click OK to exit. Your preferences should now be set. 

Internet Explorer 7

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. Click on the Tools drop-down in the upper right corner.
  3. From the drop-down menu, select Internet Options.

  4. Click on the Privacy tab.
  5. Locate the Pop-up Blocker subsection, and either check or uncheck the box next to Turn on Pop-up Blocker (the box is outlined in red in the example image below).

  6. Click Apply in the bottom right corner of the window.
  7. Then click OK to exit. Your preference should now be set.

Internet Explorer 8

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. Click on the Tools drop-down in the upper right corner.
  3. Then click Pop-up Blocker to open its options.
  4. From the menu that appears, select either Turn Off Pop-up Blocker or Turn On Pop-up Blocker. In the example image below, the pop-up blocker is enabled, so the only option available to select is Turn Off Pop-up Blocker. Whichever option appears will depend on whether your blocker is already enabled or disabled.

  5. Click on Tools again.
  6. Now select Internet Options.
  7. Click on the Privacy tab.
  8. Locate the Pop-up Blocker subsection, and either check or uncheck the box next to Turn on Pop-up Blocker. Ensure the box has a checkmark inside if you want block pop-ups.
  9. Now click on the Security tab located to the left of the Privacy tab.
  10. Click the Custom level... button toward the bottom of the window.
  11. The Security Settings window should now appear. Scroll down until you see Use Pop-up Blocker, and toggle either Enable or Disable depending on your preference. Make sure this setting matches the preceding preferences you have set in this process vis-à-vis enabling or disabling the pop-up blocker.
  12. Click OK.
  13. If this brings you back to the Internet Options window from steps 7-10, click Apply in the bottom right corner of the window.
  14. Then click OK to exit. Your preference should now be set.

Internet Explorer 9, 10, and 11

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. Click on Tools (represented by the gear icon) in the upper right corner. 
  3. Then click Pop-up Blocker to open its options.
  4. From the menu that appears, select Internet options.

  5. Click on the Privacy tab.
  6. Find Turn on Pop-up Blocker under the Pop-up Blocker subsection. Check or uncheck the box to enable or disable the pop-up blocker, respectively. A checked box indicates that the blocker will be turned on.
  7. Click Apply in the bottom right corner.
  8. Then click OK to exit the window. Your preference should now be set. 

Additional Pop-Up Preferences

You can set additional pop-up preferences if you click the Settings option located to the right of the pop-up blocker checkbox (see the image below for a visual example).

Go to the Privacy tab, then toggle the popup blocker on and off by using the checkbox
