UW-Madison Google Workspace - Consumer Applications (non-core)

This document lists Google consumer (non-core) applications that might be available to UW-Madison Google accounts. View core, supported Google applications.

These applications are not covered by the Google Workspace for Education terms of service and are unsupported by the UW-Madison Google team. View Google's terms of service for consumer (non-core) applications.

General Use

Chrome Web Store : An online marketplace where you can discover thousands of apps, extensions, and themes for Google Chrome.

Google Bookmarks: A bookmark organizer that allows you to access your bookmarks on any computer, using any browser if the bookmark tool is available, and create Lists to share your bookmarks with friends.

Google Books: A site for searching the full text of books or visiting the Google eBookstore.

Google Maps: A tool to view maps and get directions.

Google Merchant Center: The place to upload your product data to Google and make it available to Google Product Search and other Google services.

Google News: An aggregate site for news, where you can search thousands of stories.

Google Currents: Google's social networking site.

Google Takeout: Allows you to export a zip file containing your data for certain apps.

Google Web and App Activity: View and search across the full text of the pages you've visited.

YouTube: Watch, upload, and share videos.

Chrome Remote Desktop: An easy way to remotely connect with your home or work computer, or share your screen with others..

Google Alerts: Get emails when new results for a topic show up in Google Search.

Google Arts and Culture: An online marketplace where you can discover thousands of apps, extensions, and themes for Google Chrome.

Google Cloud Platform: a suite of cloud computing services that runs on the same infrastructure that Google uses internally for its end-user products, such as Google Search, Gmail, Google Drive, and YouTube.

Google Data Studio: Easily access a wide variety of data. Data Studio's built-in and partner connectors makes it possible to connect to virtually any kind of data.

Google Earth: Google Earth is a computer program that renders a 3D representation of Earth based primarily on satellite imagery. The program maps the Earth by superimposing satellite images, aerial photography, and GIS data onto a 3D globe, allowing users to see cities and landscapes from various angles.

Google My Maps: Create and share custom maps. Allow friends to see and edit your maps, or publish them to the whole world.

Google Photos*: Google Photos is the home for all your photos and videos, automatically organized and easy to share.

  • *Update: Effective November 21, 2023, newly created UW-Madison Google Workspace accounts will no longer have access to the non-core Google Photo application. Learn more.

Google Search Console: Search Console tools and reports help you measure your site's Search traffic and performance, fix issues, and make your site shine in Google Search results.

Google Translate: Google's free service instantly translates words, phrases, and web pages between English and over 100 other languages.

Google Ads: Google Ads is an online advertising platform developed by Google, where advertisers bid to display brief advertisements, service offerings, product listings, or videos to web users.

  • Note: Google Ads is not enabled for UW-Madison Google Workspace accounts. Individuals who create a consumer Google account to create a Google Ads account for university business should review the risks before committing to this approach. 

Google Gemini: Gemini is an experiment that lets you collaborate with generative AI. As a creative and helpful collaborator, Gemini can supercharge your imagination and boost your productivity. Learn more.

Writing

Blogger: A blogging application that allows you to create and design a web page for your blog.

FeedBurner: A service providing the option to offer subscriptions to your blog or podcast and track subscription statistics.


Expert Use

Google Public Data Explorer: Makes large datasets easy to explore, visualize, and communicate.

Google Scholar: Google Scholar provides a simple way to broadly search for scholarly literature.


Developers

Google Analytics: A tool that provides insight into any website traffic and marketing effectiveness.

Google Colab: Colaboratory, or "Colab" for short, is a product from Google Research that allows anybody to write and execute arbitrary python code through the browser.

Google Programmable Search (formerly Custom Search): A tool that allows you to provide a search option on your own web site that filters results by limiting the searches to only reputable sites that you specify.
