X-Win32 & FastX
All students, faculty and staff at University of Wisconsin-Madison can make use of X-Win32 and FastX in order to connect to servers on campus. Use for personal purposes, such as connecting to a personal Linux machine is also covered. FastX is particularly well suited for people connecting from home to servers on campus. Performance of FastX over WAN connections is close to LAN-like so even high-end graphics applications perform well. The X11 protocol on which X-Win32 is based is usually too heavy for remote use.
The only requirement is that Administrators will need to install the FastX server component onto the Linux machines that host the applications users need to access. Desktop clients are unlicensed and users can also use their Web browser to access applications.
Available for download by faculty, staff, and students through the Campus Software Library or your local campus IT endpoint management system.
