Using the "Enable NetID" Button and the NetID Enable/Disable Tool
All Help Desk agents have access to the "Enable NetID" button in the NetID Utility. If any errors occur or a more sophisticated enable is needed, then HDQA and most full-time staff members are authorized for the old NetID Enable/Disable Tool.
When should I use the tool?
Using either of these tools to enable a NetID in the following situations:
- A user has been disabled because he or she responded to a phishing attempt
- A user has been disabled because his or her computer was infected by a virus/malware
- A user has been deactivated for the reason "Excessive Downloads"
For all of the above scenarios, please ensure that the procedures outlined in Help Desk - Identifying a Compromised NetID in NIDU have been followed.
When should I not use the tool?
Do not use the tool in the following situations:
- Never use the tool to disable an account. If you feel there is a reason to disable an account, please gather relevant information (including contact information) and escalate an incident to Security-BadgIRT.
- Never enable an account that is not disabled. Doing so can damage the account in question.
- Do not enable accounts that were disabled due to copyright infringement. These accounts will ultimately be re-enabled by DoIT Security. See Security - WiscVPN Copyright Quarantine Process for more information.
- Exception: If the account was disabled due to copyright infringement in the previous academic semester or earlier, you may enable the account
- If in the NetID utility the reason for disable is "former employee", do not enable the account.
- If an account was disabled for an unclear or unfamiliar reason, please consult a full time staff member or DoIT Security officer.
- Do not use the tool to work around a re-enable button not appearing in NIDU. Consult the Office of Cybersecurity first instead.
