CHM Undergrads - FAN Meetings

What are FAN Meetings?
Fun with Affective Neuroscience (FAN) meetings are hour-long events, held four times per semester, for our undergraduates to learn about CHM research beyond the students' own projects. FAN meetings are led by CHM graduate students, scientists, and affiliated faculty, who present on their work or study. A few times a year the meetings focus on professional development (for example, different career options in research and different paths to get there; how to craft a CV; how to use social media to facilitate professional networking).
Recording Time Spent at a Meeting
- Research credit students will record FAN meeting time on their logsheets.
- Hourly (paid) students will record the time spent at the meeting on their Workday timesheets.
Research Credit Student Requirements
- Research credit students whose instructor is Richie Davidson are required to attend FAN meetings, and will record FAN meeting time on their logsheets.
- Research credit students whose instructor is someone other than Richie Davidson are not required to attend (but encouraged).
- Hourly (paid) students are encouraged to attend FAN meetings.
Check the Canvas FAN meeting module for an assignment titled "To Review in Advance." This assignment contains readings and information to provide background information. You are expected to review this information before the FAN meeting.
Missing a FAN Meeting
When Richie Davidson's credit students have course conflicts with FAN meetings, students should contact their supervisors to figure out an alternative assignment.
The goal of FAN meetings is for students to interact with the speaker and to learn more about CHM research beyond the students’ own project. A few times a year the FAN meetings focus on professional development (for example, different career options in research and different paths to get there; how to craft a CV; how to use social media to facilitate professional networking).
The student's supervisor will determine the substitute assignment based on the needs of the supervisor, the student, and the project.
Alternative assignment examples include:
-
attending CHM Research Meetings or CHM Community Meetings.
-
Students can also participate in their supervisors’ mentor’s lab meetings.
Supervisors do not need to use these examples and can come up with their own alternative assignment for their students. The supervisor needs to tell Jane and Maddie at undergrad_admin@chm.wisc.edu what the FAN substitutions will be.
FAN Dates
For FAN meeting dates, please see Important Dates. Information can also be found in the Canvas FAN meeting modules.
