CHM IT - Restoring a file from backup

How to restore a file from backup

Files stored on the CHM drive are automatically backed up once per day, and file versions (i.e. backups) are stored for 180 days before being removed from the backup pool.

If you have a file on a desktop computer in a mapped network drive (i.e. Desktop, Downloads, Photos, Documents), or a file stored on the CHM Shared Drive, these files can be pulled from the backup using the "Previous Versions" feature of Windows.

How to restore a file or folder from backup:

Note: you MUST do this on a WINDOWS computer.

  • Navigate to the file or folder you'd like to restore from backup. If a folder was deleted, navigate to the next folder above it (for example, if you deleted the folder "IMPORTANT" in the hierarchy: "CHM Share Drive\RSC\Files\IMPORTANT\", navigate to "CHM Share Drive\RSC\Files")
  • Right click on the file and go to "properties"
  • The properties window will appear. Select the "Previous Versions" tab and wait for the file list to populate.
  • Select a previous version of the file. You can open the file to see the changes, or restore the file.
  • IMPORTANT: Restoring the file will DELETE the current version of the file, so if you want to keep the current version, make sure you make a copy somewhere else!
  • Once you hit "restore", your previous file should replace the current file.
