This document outlines the legal holidays that the University of Wisconsin system observes for both Academic and University staff.
List of Paid Legal Holidays:
UW–Madison grants eligible employees nine paid legal holidays per fiscal year (July 1 - June 30) for the following legal holidays:
- July 4 (Independence Day)
- First Monday in September (Labor Day)
- Fourth Thursday in November (Thanksgiving Day)
- December 24 (Christmas Eve Day)
- December 25 (Christmas Day)
- December 31 (New Year's Eve Day)
- January 1 (New Year's Day)
- Third Monday in January (Martin Luther King, Jr. Day)
- Last Monday in May (Memorial Day)

Legal Holiday Observance tips:
If legal holidays of January 1, July 4, and December 25 fall on a Sunday, University offices are closed on the following day (Monday) and the holiday is observed on that Monday.
If any other legal holidays fall on a regularly scheduled day off (such as Saturday or Sunday) employees are granted floating holiday time. This means you can choose to use the time off when you like (like vacation hours)
