CHM IT - Connecting to Research/Restricted Drive

How to connect to the research or restricted drive:

Windows Laptop - Connect to Research Drive

Connecting with a Windows Machine

HEY! Before you continue: did the PI of this drive (or IT) grant you access? You need those permissions set before continuing!

  • First, connect to the UW-Madison VPN.

  • Open “This PC” by clicking Start and typing “This PC”, then hit enter

  • At the top of the explorer window, click “Computer” and “Map Network Drive”:

  • “Drive” can be any letter you’d like.

  • "Folder" will be the address of the research/restricted drive. This will change based on the PI. Example:

  • Make sure to click the “reconnect at sign-in” and “connect using different credentials” button

  • Click “Finish”

  • On the next window, enter AD\(your netID). It’s VERY IMPORTANT you include “AD\” otherwise this will not work!

Connecting with a Mac Machine

HEY! Before you continue: did the PI of this drive (or IT) grant you access? You need those permissions set before continuing!

Windows Laptop - Connecting to Restricted Drive

Connecting with a Windows Machine

HEY! Before you continue: did the PI of this drive (or IT) grant you access? You need those permissions set before continuing!

Restricted drive requires a few extra steps before you are allowed access. You must sign up for a Static VPN IP Address, and have that IP address whitelisted (i.e. allowed) through the firewall, otherwise you won't be able to connect.

Static VPN IP Signup:

  1. Visit this site and sign in with your NetID/Password: https://access.services.wisc.edu/IPaddress
  2. Scroll to the bottom and press "Reserve a Static IP". Select "OK" on the popup
  3. A static IP address will appear next to your NetID. You will see "_1" next to your NetID, this is normal. Copy these numbers.
  4. Email this Static IP address to help@chm.wisc.edu and let us know you'd like to be whitelisted for the restricted drive. This process may take 24-48 hours. In the meantime, you can use a CHM touchdown machine or our remote desktop server Peach  (see: CHM IT - Connecting to Peach (Remote Desktop/Terminal Server)) to connect to the drive and do work.

Static IP

Once your Static VPN IP Whitelisting has been completed:

  • Connect to the UW-Madison VPN using NETID_1 as your username. (Replace "NetID" with your NetID. Same password as normal)

  • Open “This PC” by clicking Start and typing “This PC”, then hit enter

  • At the top of the explorer window, click “Computer” and “Map Network Drive”:

  • “Drive” can be any letter you’d like.

  • "Folder" will be the address of the restricted drive. This will change based on the PI. Example:

    • \\restricted.drive.wisc.edu\rjdavids

If you don't know - ask your PI or IT!

  • Make sure to click the “reconnect at sign-in” and “connect using different credentials” button

  • Click “Finish”

  • On the next window, enter AD\(your netID). It’s VERY IMPORTANT you include “AD\” otherwise this will not work!
