Teaching and Learning in the Animal Sciences
Challenging Old Assumptions and Break New Ground for the 21st Century

Aims: Because the organizing committee has planned for an interactive conference with multiple opportunities to share ideas and insights, participants are invited to submit a short communication and present it at a poster session. Short Communications will be reviewed, published in conference proceedings, and disseminated with other conference outcomes on a series of websites.

Types of Short Communications: Short communications should consist of original work on new and innovative projects and/or scholarly findings pertaining to educating the animal science student. It must not describe work that has already been accepted for publication or published in a journal but can describe work that has been presented as either an oral or poster presentation somewhere else (e.g., workshops.) In addition to scholarship of teaching and learning (i.e., research in teaching projects), the committee encourages provocative and “out of the box” initiatives or success stories worthy of sharing, targeted literature reviews, essays on reflective teaching practices, or teaching and learning "memoirs."

Short Communication Guidelines: The authors submitting a short communication are responsible for its content and quality. The short communication should be a summary of factual information rooted and/or connected to a body of literature that addresses any of the five themes of this conference: The changing instructors; The changing students; Creating an effective teaching and learning environment; Fostering scholarship and “opening” the doors of the animal sciences classrooms to diverse stakeholders, and; Providing incentives, and recognizing and promoting effective teaching among current and future instructors. A high-quality short communication contains the following elements (without necessarily designating them with headings):

  1. A brief introduction, including an objective(s) statement;
  2. Relevant methodological details (experimental conditions, mode of data collection, scope of inference, evidence-gathering technique (e.g., survey, interview, database search criteria, student written evaluation, peer-review, etc.) and statistical methods (if deemed appropriate);
  3. Observations, results, findings (summarization of data in Tables or Figures is optional) and interpretation thereof. Philosophical abstracts must demonstrate application of said philosophy;
  4. Clearly and concisely stated closing statements (conclusions or implications);
  5. A list of citations.

Format and submission Instructions:

  • Short communications are limited to one page (1 inch margins, 12 pts Times New Roman font);
  • Title should be in bold text, followed by a blank line;
  • Next, the author(s) name(s) and affiliation(s) should be in italicized text followed by corresponding author's email;
  • Then, use indented paragraphs, as needed, to present the body of the abstract, followed by a blank line;
  • Finally, include a complete list of properly cited references;
  • Save your document using the last name of the corresponding author followed by a 10-digit phone contact (e.g., wattiaux608-2633493.doc);
  • Email your saved document to by the NEW Deadline May 15, 2012.

The corresponding author will be notified of any request for revisions and a revised version will be accepted or rejected on short notice. If you have any questions, contact conference program committee chairs Dr. Michel Wattiaux, or Dr. Jean Bertrand.


The poster board are 48 inches (123 cm) high and 72 inches (183 cm) wide. You are welcome to set up your poster on Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning (7:00 - 8:30 am) in any of the board in the Upper Lounge of the Lowell Ctr (see map here). Posters will be on display until Wednesday 5:30 pm.
