MFA-Duo - Supported Mobile Versions

Update for Non-Compliant Duo Mobile Applications:

You must update the Duo Mobile app by March 31 on your mobile device to keep your access to Canvas, email, Zoom and other university systems.

Update now — it takes 2 minutes:

  1. Open the App Store (iPhone/iPad) or Play Store (Android)

  2. Search for "Duo Mobile"

  3. Tap Update

What is happening?

Duo Security will end support for versions older than 4.85.0 after March 31 to improve security. When that happens, older versions of the app will stop working for NetID authentication.

Note: Version numbers can be tricky. Version number 4.104.0 is newer than 4.85.0 because you compare each section separately (104 > 85).

If you cannot update the app

Your phone’s operating system may be too old. The Duo Mobile app requires:

  • iPhone & iPad: iOS 16 or newer
  • Android: Android 12 or newer

How to check your operating system version:

  • iPhone: Go to Settings, then General, then About, then iOS Version
  • Android: Go to Settings, then About Phone, then Android Version

If your phone is too old to update

You have a number of options:

  1. Use a different phone or tablet that meets the requirements above
  2. Use Duo Mobile passcodes (these are time-based one-time passcodes generated in the Duo Mobile application). 
    1. In the Duo prompt, tap “Other options” and select Duo Mobile passcode.  
    2. Open the Duo Mobile application on your device.  
    3. Tap on your UW-Madison account listed in the app to view a 6-digit passcode code. 
    4. Enter the 6-digit code during login to complete verification.
  3. Create backup passcodes before March 31 (Instructions for creating backup passcodes)
  4. Add a second device (like a tablet or another phone) to your Duo account that supports Duo Mobile version 4.85 or higher. More information: https://kb.wisc.edu/iam/81457 
  5. Request a Duo security key fob from your Human Resources office, your IT department or from the DoIT Help Desk
