NetID Login Service - Logout Procedure

This document explains how to log out of NetID Login Service.

How To Log Out

You must exit your browser (Quit on a Mac) to log out of your NetID Login session and make sure your session cookies are cleared (see Clearing Browser Cache and Cookies).

Making sure your browser doesn't save your NetID session

More and more often, browsers allow you to save your session state and reload it the next time you open the browser.  Depending on the browser's settings and version, it's possible that the Logout Procedure above will not clear your NetID Login session.  This is a serious security concern, since it could allow others to reopen your browser and continue with your NetID Login session.

You'll find instructions below for accessing the session save settings in browsers where this behavior has been confirmed.

Firefox

In Firefox, here's how to find the session save setting:

  1. Click the three lines in the upper right of your Firefox browser window, then select settings.
  2. The general section will open and the first setting you should see will be Startup
    1. The box labeled "Open previous windows and tabs" should remain unchecked in order to start a new session each time you open the browser
    2. Or you can check the box and it will restore your previous session each time you open Firefox.

Chrome

In Chrome, here's how to find the session save setting:

  1. Click the 3 radio button dots in the upper right of your Chrome browser window, then select settings.
  2. In the search bar at the top enter "startup" without quotes.
  3. To avoid saving your session state, select Open the new tab page
    1. Or to save your session state, select Continue where you left off.

Safari

In Safari, here's how to find the session save setting:

  1. Go into Safari > Preferences...
  2. On the General tab, view the drop down list options for Safari opens with:
  • To avoid saving your session state, select A new window
  • To save your session state, select All windows from last session

Edge

Microsoft Edge runs as a background process by default. As a result, session data will be maintained even after closing all browser windows. This can pose a security concern, and therefore should be turned off if you are ever using Edge from a public computer. To toggle this setting off:

  1. Click the 3 dots in the upper right hand corner of the Edge browser window, then select settings.
  2. From the left-side menu, click 'Systems and Performance'
  3. Scroll to Continue running background extensions and apps when Microsoft Edge is closed to toggle it off.

To prevent Edge from saving your session tabs after you have closed the browser window:

  1. Click the 3 dots in the upper right hand corner of the Edge browser window, then select settings
  2. From the left-side menu, click 'Start, home, and new tabs'
  3. Under Where Edge starts, check the option that says 'Open the new tab page'. Make sure 'Open tabs from the previous session' is not selected.
