Campus Active Directory - Changing Your OU Administrator Account Password

Active Directory OU administrators can change their password from any Windows machine joined to Campus Active Directory domain and connected to the campus network.

***The machine you perform the password change from must be joined to the Campus Active Directory domain (ad.wisc.edu). It must also be connected to the campus network through a hard-wired connection or the UWNet WiFi. If not on the campus network you must connect to the campus VPN service

***If you do not have access to a machine joined to Campus Active Directory you can now use the Remote Desktop Service.

Windows:

  1. Log into a Windows workstation with your NetID.
  2. Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete. If you are in a remote session press Ctrl-Alt-End. Then click Change a Passwordctrl-alt-del
  3. Change the username field to your Active Directory OU admin username (NetID-ou).
  4. Enter your current password in the 'Old password' field. If you have just had your -ou account password reset, you will enter your temporary password in the 'Old password' field instead.
  5. Enter your new desired password twice. Click the arrow icon to change the password.

Password Requirements:
    • Password history
      • 24 passwords remembered (first password cannot be reused until 24 new passwords have been used)
      • Minimum age 1 day (cannot be changed in less than 24 hours)
  •
    • Complexity
      • Be at least eight characters in length
      • Contain characters from three of the following four categories:
        • English uppercase characters (A through Z)
        • English lowercase characters (a through z)
        • Base 10 digits (0 through 9)
        • Non-alphabetic characters (for example, !, $, #, %)

PowerShell:

  1.  Open PowerShell (elevation is not needed), and type the following cmdlet, replacing the target identity with your -OU account: Set-ADAccountPassword -Identity netid-ou
  2.  Enter your current password when prompted.
  3.  Next you will be prompted to enter your new password, following the password requirements mentioned above.
  4.  Re-enter your password and press Enter to confirm.

Note: If your -OU account has just been provisioned to you by the CAD team and the cmdlet outputs the following error message, you are likely attempting a password change within a 24 hour window of your account being created:

Please wait 24 hours from the time your credentials was provided by the CAD team and attempt the password change again.

Note: If the admin has forgotten their password entirely, they can email activedirectory@doit.wisc.edu to request a reset.

Important: If you are attempting to change the password for your NetID account, you cannot change your password here. You must use the NetID Account Modification Tool to change your NetID's password.

Important: Passwords can only be changed every 24 hours for account security.

Older Windows Versions: The above screenshots are taken from Windows 10. The instructions still apply to Windows 7/8/8.1 but there may be subtle changes to the field names and buttons. Please e-mail activedirectory@doit.wisc.edu if you have any questions changing your password.
