UW–Madison offers two types of 1Password accounts: University accounts and Families accounts. The key differences between these account types are outlined below to help you choose the best option for your needs.

Who Should Use a University Account?

A University account is best for:

  • Saving university-related passwords.
  • Sharing passwords with other UW–Madison users.

Examples of University Account Use:

  • Storing your NetID credentials.
  • Sharing team passwords for shared UW–Madison resources.

Who Should Use a Families Account?

A Families account is ideal for:

  • Saving personal passwords, such as bank accounts or social media logins.
  • Sharing passwords with family members.

Examples of Families Account Use:

  • Managing personal financial accounts securely.
  • Organizing private, non-university passwords.

Can I Have Both a University and Families Account?

Yes! Best practices include:

  • Using your University account for university-related passwords.
  • Using your Families account for personal passwords.

1Password allows you to sign in to multiple accounts simultaneously. This ensures seamless access to both university and personal credentials.

How Do I Sign Up for These Accounts?

  1. University Accounts:

    • University accounts are being offered first to existing LastPass users to allow ample time for transitioning.
    • Sign-up mechanisms for new University accounts will be available in the future.
  2. Families Accounts:

    • Free personal accounts can be redeemed using a voucher or linked to a University account.
    • Additional details on signing up for Families accounts will also be made available soon.
