How to Request a 1Password Account

Instructions for requesting a UW-Madison 1Password account will be available by May 2025. We are actively developing a self service request mechanism for new users who would like to activate an account. These instructions will be updated when the self service request is available. If you did not use LastPass and your team has converted to 1Password, contact the 1Password team to request an invite.

LastPass Users

• As of December 2024, current LastPass users have been invited to create a 1Password account.
• LastPass and 1Password administrators are unable to migrate users passwords between tools, so LastPass users were invited to 1Password as early as possible to give a large transition time period.
• LastPass will be decommissioned in May 2025.

Free Families Account

Free 1Password Families accounts are available for personal use. The Families account is separate from your UW-Madison University account, and you do not need a University account to redeem it. Activation Process

• Look for an invitation email from accounts@1password.com with the subject line: "Join University of Wisconsin - Madison on 1Password."
• Click Join now in the email and sign in with your NetID.

• The browser you use to activate your account becomes your first trusted device.

Next Steps

• Immediately add additional trusted devices. 
  • Install and sign-in to the 1Password browser extension and desktop app.
• Import your existing passwords.
