What is the web address for UW-Madison's 1Password instance?
The URL for UW-Madison's 1Password instance is uw-madison.1password.com. This is specific to UW-Madison and is different than the URL used for personal 1Password accounts.
What email address will be used for my 1Password account?
New 1Password accounts are created using your netid@wisc.edu email address.
Netid@wisc.edu is used because it is a unique and mostly permanent identifier for users. Users at UW-Madison may have many email addresses in a variety of systems, and can set a preferred email in Profile that differs from their primary email address in Microsoft 365. Preferred and primary email addresses change much more frequently than netid@wisc.edu. Because of these variations across systems, netid@wisc.edu is used to ensure users are able to login to 1Password.
Get started with 1Password in your browser
The 1Password browser extension is the easiest way to save, fill, and change passwords in your computer’s browser. You can use it to sign in to websites and apps, view items, and find exactly what you need.
Get the 1Password apps
We strongly recommend all users install the 1Password desktop or mobile app. This ensures you can always access 1Password, even if you get signed out or clear your browser cache.
1Password is available on all your devices, so you’ll always have all your information with you. Any changes you make on one device are immediately available everywhere else.
There’s also a lot you can do with the apps, like viewing your Watchtower dashboard, organizing your items with tags and favorites, and much more.
Import your existing passwords
You can move your existing information from other password managers into 1Password, including password managers built into popular browsers. When you import your information, it’s even easier to change and strengthen your passwords.
Update your auto-lock timing settings
You can change how often you need to unlock 1Password, like after your device sleeps or you close 1Password.
Get to know your Vaults
Vaults are containers to help you organize your items and share with others.
-
Your Employee vault is where you store university-related items that aren’t shared with others, like your password for your university account. Learn more about your Employee vault.
-
The Shared vault has items that everyone at UW-Madison can access.
Share with others
You may have access to additional vaults that are shared with other people on your team. To share an item with someone, move it into a vault you share with them.
