Denodo: Using Data Marketplace Tools
Denodo's Data Marketplace has a set of tools that allow the users to explore data views, create and save queries, perform data preparation, and trace the data lineage of views. This document will help users navigate the tools and elements within a view. For help connecting to the Catalog, please refer to Denodo: Connect to Data Marketplace.
In the diagram below, the left list of databases (number 1) will bring up the Summary View (number 2) when you click on the name of the view. The Open In control (number 3) will allow you to get connection strings to open the view in Tableau or Power BI. The question mark icon (number 4) allows you to get additional context-sensitive help.
Locate the sub-menu of tools. These will include Summary, Schema, Query, Data Preparation, Relationships, Data Lineage, and Reference Lineage. The tools are further explained below.
Summary
This tool provides basic information about the view including its description and subdomain, and may contain links to additional view documentation.
Schema
This tool provides an inventory of the data columns, data types, and column-level descriptions.
Query
This tool provides a drop-and-drag query builder to select, filter, and order data within a query, as well as allow you to save your query setup.
- Fields - click to select all the items you wish to bring into the other sections of the query, and then drag them to that region of the screen.
- Output - Include the fields you wish as output fields in this region
- Filters - include the fields on which you want to filter the results
- Order By - include the fields and sort order (ascending / descending) you wish for the results
- Execute - when you are ready to view your results.

After you click Execute, your query results will appear in a new screen.
If you wish to modify your query, click on the (1) DEFINITION link above the query results.
Data Preparation
This tool provides additional enhancements to the Query tool by allowing you to create additional columns, transformations, aggregations, and filters.
In addition to selecting fields (as with Query), you can also create new fields by selecting Add Column.
When you create a new column, the column can have a constant values, a column value, a transformation, an expression value, or be empty.
If you wish to enter a VQL expression (similar to SQL), then choose the option for "an expression value". In the example below, the new column titled "distinct_terms_per_year" contains a distinct count of the terms - which is what creates the second column in the data prep view.
Once you have added the additional columns and filters desired, click [NEXT] in the main Data Preparation panel, and then your results will be displayed.

At this point you can click the VQL tool to copy and paste the VQL source code, you can Export the results of your Data Preparation, or you can Save the query for later use.
Relationships
This tool provides a diagram showing how the data view is related to other Data Views. In this example, it shows that acad_car_term_dim has not yet been coded as being related to other views.
Data Lineage
This tool provides a diagram showing the data lineage, from the source system up until the view currently open. In this example, the current view of acad_car_term_dim traces back to a view called biv_ia_dm_acad_car_term_dim, which then traces back to a view called bv_ia_dm_acad_car_term_dim, which then traces back to the data source ds_ia.
Reference Lineage
This tool provides a diagram showing all of the data views, objects, and apps that reference this view.
In this example, no other views or apps are based on the view acad_car_term_dim.
