New lab member checklist

Congrats on deciding to join BLAB or SMAC Lab! Here are some things you can get started on:
  1. If you are a student, make sure you are enrolled in the correct course.
    1. To enroll in CSD 699, email Chris Pahl (cmpahl@wisc.edu) and CC the lab manager <cwnaber@wisc.edu>. Include your name, student ID number, which class you need permission to enroll for (CS&D 699), and which professor you are enrolling with (Dr. Niziolek or Dr. Parrell). Once Chris Pahl gives you permission, enroll via the UW Search and Enrollment portal. Choose the correct number of credits - most students enroll for 2 credits during their first semester in the lab.
    2. For Bio 152 or some other course, follow instructions from your primary instructor. This may or may not require you to enroll in another course formally.
  2. The lab manager will send you a form so you can work at the Waisman Center. Fill it out and return to the lab manager. (To staff: these are stored in /smng/admin/hiring/Appt. Req. Forms/)
    1. To students who are completing the unpaid appointment form, fill out these sections:
      1. On first page: Name, Email, Cell phone, Address, Emergency Contact Name and Phone. If the lab manager specifically requested it, also include SSN and date of birth. Make sure you are sending this via encrypted email.
      2. On second page: Name, Student ID, Signature, and Date.
  3. To work with participants and participant data, you must complete certain training. Follow the generalized version of the instructions at this link to sign into "CITI" to complete certain training courses. Ignore the specific courses mentioned at that link. The courses you need to register for and complete are:
    1. Human Subjects Protections Course
    2. GCP – Social and Behavioral Research Best Practices for Clinical Research
      1. Note: These courses may take a few hours. You can use the VCRGE Training Info Lookup Tool to see all the courses you've completed.
  4. Once the semester starts, almost all of our lab's communication will happen on Slack. Once the lab manager sends you an invite to join our Slack, accept it. Then add a profile picture and change your name to your preferred name!
  5. We like to list everyone in the lab on our website! Please send me a headshot and short biography I can include for you.
  6. The lab manager will send you an invite to certain Google Calendars, including SMNG and SMAC Lab or BLAB Lab. Make sure you click Accept to give yourself access to those calendars.
  7. You will soon get an email from Waisman IT with a subject like "Waisman computing account logon instructions." Save that email! You'll need the username/password the first time you log into the computers at Waisman.

At some point, the lab manager may ask about your availability for lab hours / lab meetings.
